So I am replacing the king pins on my 86 k30 and i pull out the drivers side axle shaft and its all rusted, I thought there was an outer seal in the axle tube to keep the water out of there? If there is any tips for getting the old one out and the new one in? thanks

Front axles only use an inner seal which is removed and replaced from inside the pumpkin. There is a company that sells an outer seal for a D60 axle but IMHO isn't worth the money if you hose out the axle tube when you're done playing in mud.

There is just an inner seal where the tube meets the center section to keep oil in. You can see where the axle rides on it towards the splines there is a shiny ring.

Mad 4WD sells outer seals for the 60.

My shafts were this way when I rebuilt my 60 as well. I cleaned them up and hit them wit some etching primer and paint. Check my build thread for pics of my rebuild.

X3....someone here said to put a PVC pipe inside the axle tube to help keep the crap out of the diff. Havne't tried it personally.

Thank for the answers. Yep I can see where the inside seal runs so I guess I am good to go.

The pvc was just to keep you from dragging the spline end of the shaft through all the crap in the bottom when reinstalling the shaft. Getting teh splines dirty like this often tears up the inner seal, and causes it to leak. Guess how i know it causes it to leak?:doah:
