Got an 85 blazer from the rustbelt, going to be putting in a rollcage but it won't do any good until I get the floor repaired. Its rusted through behind both of the front seats and along both rockers (with the rockers being rusted through too.)

The question is how much do I replace? I'm not going for restoration, just safety. I read through the other floor replacement thread on this site, but don't know if I want do cut out the entire floor. Any ideas?

I'm in the process of tearing out the interior, I'll try and get some pics posted up later to show the extent of the rust.

floor?

What about the floor? Should I just patch some panels in and call it good? Right now I don't have anything solid to mount the rollcage on top of.

Depends on how bad it is. If it's extensive you might want to do the whole floor

Get to cutting

Cut em out and replace with a heavier gage sheet metal. Replacement panels cost a good bit (200-400), but a 4x8 sheet of 14 gage was about 75 bucks

what about running the tube directly to the frame. thats what i did on my s10 but on the k5s i guess the frame is kinda narrow. on my old mud truck i welded any thing i could find onto the floor

rusty floor

This tub is pretty well shot, stripping out the interior out of the back and the whole rear panel is rusted out at the back edge of the bed. I've already looked the area over for a better tub and can't find anything out there. Thinking about resuming the search, this tub it just way too far gone.

Cut out the rockers and do sliders. That's what most people do

I'd like to see some pictures of what people have done with their rusty rockers and putting in sliders. I know ORD's green truck has something like that on it. But can any one post some links?

There used to be a tech article from many moons ago about doing rock slider rockers with box steel. I forget who wrote it but it was on the main page and was one of the first times I had ever seen someone do something like that.

It's something I plan on doing next but haven't done it so no pics from me.

I'm assuming that it looks something like what Ryoken has done...

floors

Ryoken has exactly the perfect build thread for this. I thought maybe his was an old style, but its the same style as mine. My tube is just a little more gone then his, my quarters are almost rusted to shreads.

hopefully I'll be back on that pretty soon.. well, as soon as my seats come in... :wink1:

I found the key to fitting em up to be working off that sill cut at the bottom of the door.. just work all your cuts off that, forward, back and in...

I used a combo of a 7" cut-off wheel on a full size grinder, plasma and sawzall..

I've added to my design since deciding to do the cage now.. Not only will they be hard mounted to the new cab supports, but I'm also now going to attach them to the cage to frame tie-ins hopefully...

new cab?

I may have a line on a free clip and cab from an 89 pickup. Never been opposed to building a trazer since I've been looking for good cabs too, so I might just see if I can get it to work.
