My buddy is thinking about getting an '02 S-10 ZR2. Its in really great shape about 54,000 miles on it and looks like it might have a small lift in it. Its got BFGoodrich All Terrains on it. I was just curious to know what people thought about S-10's and the ZR2 package which I think has a locker in the rear included. Give me the good and the bad. He's just looking for a truck to be a daily driver and beable to get through mild terrain for hunting and snow...

We just discussed this. Oh yeah, and it's a regular ol' G80 Grenade Lock limited slip.

Tell him to go find a FX4/Level II Ranger of a similar vintage, preferably one with a 5 speed stick. Much better truck if you want to stay American.

Also a similar vintage TRD Tacoma would walk all over both, actually have a locker, and get better gas mileage.

They hold their value well. At the end of their production run a S10 depreciated to about half of it's purchase price the instant you bought it.
In some places the Tacomas, especially the TRD's, gained or at least held value due to them being in such demand. If I could have afforded one I would have bought one about 5 years ago...it was niiiiice...jet black extended cab 4x4 with the 3.4L, a 5 speed, the TRD package and some BFG AT's (not my fav but brand new)...1 year old and 22k on the ticker and the Toyota dealership wanted $500 less than the brand new trucks were going for.

Oh yeah...with a factory warranty if you get them installed at a Toyota dealer...

I had a 04 ZR2 s-10 Blazer, I loved it! Had it for a year and a half, like 36,000 miles, traded it in for a 05 Honda Civic (yes, I am an idiot!:doah:). Wish I still had the ZR2!:( I traded it figuring I wanted a high mileage commuter vehicle, never shoulda gotten rid of the ZR2. Got sick/rid of the Civic about a year and a half later. Anyways, about the ZR2, I wheeled it a fair bit, had it in mud that when I was in a rut was almost up to the door handle, got through it! :D Had fun at URE with it a few times, hit various little other trails. When I bought it, it had passenger car tread tires on it so, I swapped to BFG all terrains then, later, I put BFG mud terrains (stock size 31x10.50R15). The only complaints I had with the truck were the "locker" doesn't lock and it needed more ground clearance! Put a Detroit out back, diversified creations cut out fender flares (if they've released them yet), and some bigger tires, you'd be set! I'm actually encouraging my GF to trade in her car and get a ZR2, that way I can borrow it for old time's sake!:D
