How much did the wheelbase hurt ya.

If I do my crew cab I would kind of like to keep it long, but it will be my mild trail rig too so I don't want to keep all of the current wheelbase, Thinking about mabey going to around the 145" range.

What think ye?

Climbing something is so nice with my Suburban, not scared to drive up a wall with it. I know it wont flip over backwards, now Jeeps on the other hand Im not fond of, to tippy feeling in any direction. Now, in trails, tight turns bring the suck. I installed twin sticks to help with this, and it does, but there's just some things your not going to be able evade. Really, depends on how willing you are to sacrifice sheetmetal to achieve your goals.

My friend tried to wheel a burb for awhile. Tough to get around tough obstacles. Break over was the major problem with too much rocker to get over the bigger stuff. Was pretty good on easy trails and open wooden trails. Just couldn't maneuver good for anything major. The crew cut down with short box or flat would be a easier wheeler.

I have always thought that burbs and reg cab pickups were the same wheelbase. no?

In my experience, you need to match height with width and length. Since you can't go around stuff, you need to be tall enough to go over.

Unless there are trees.......then you are screwed. Aka as mtblazer89's truck.

I loved the wheel base on my crew cab for crawling over things.

Actually the 73-87 Burbs have a slightly shorter wheelbase ,127.5" vs 131.5" for an 8' bed pickup,so they have a bit tighter turning radius and it does make a noticeable difference between the two when you drive one, than the other....the overhang of the body on the burbs is the main obstacle when approaching and desending steep inclines...the burb seems harder to wheel due to the lack of visibilty to the rear though,if you get into a bad spot and have to back it up....its rare to see a burb with no sheet metal damage in the rear due to this!..

Brandon (miniwally) wheeled his ex-cab longbed F250 at 150" wheelbase for a little while and it did pretty good. Crack and back, Hole in the rock, etc. Our "Willard" crewcab is about 130 as was my suburban and both worked well. I had a lot of fun with that crewcab all over Moab, the Burb too. In your case I think you're hitting the sweet spot of use-ability and ability. You'll have a decent size bed on the truck and if you fabricate it you can drag it around trees and rocks when necessary while still carrying a LOT of stuff.

As usual, you should add in all the tools you can to add ability to help make up for the lack of clearance in tough stuff. Front dig, strong parts, armor where you can, smooth engine, tires/wheel package that you can air down, good recovery gear, brains etc. Most of this game is about those tools and how to use them to offset your disabilities. Trees will be tough but rockers bars that stick out what would normally appear to be a stupid amount will really help.
