I just picked up a 91 s10 PU for $400:D . The kid who had it replaced the stock rad.fan with and elec, but he wired it to the headlights:confused: . So in order for the fan to work, turn the headlights on:rolleyes: . I'd rather have a stockish fan set-up (this is going to be a parts and garbage hauler). I've read some posts about direct mounting the fan and not using a clutch. I like this from a cost standpoint (don't have to buy a clutch) but is this the way to go?

It has a 2.5l and 5 speed and will see mostly in town runs and a highway run once and a while.

Non-clutch fans (typically called flex fans) are worse in regards to cooling than a clutched fan, but it really depends on how easy the motor is to cool, which would factor in radiator size, cooling system condition, etc.
