I am buying an S10 for a cheap commuter car because gas is killing me daily driving my 10mpg truck 45mins into Boston everyday. I've always liked S10s and wanted to know what you guys think of them. I am looking at S10 from the mid to later 90s with 2wd 4cyl 5spd regular cab shortbed. What are your opinions on them? Also can anyone prove they can get up to 30mpg?

i dont know about the s-10's getting 30 mpg but i doubt they are far off. I have a ranger 2.3 4cyl. shortbox regular cab 5speed and it got 30, i doubt the s10 in the same setup would be far off from that. it will definetly be better than 10mpg =P, the 2.8's usualy get better than 18mpg in a 2wd, so the 4cyl should get close to 30.

I once had an s-10 pickup with a 4 cyl and 2wd. great little truck but I blew the clutch out of the thing towing a boat. Well to be honest I overloaded that truck a lot with rock and hay and I am sure wore the clutch out with that, it just decided to fail with a boat in tow. I would own one again.

Dad just got an 01 S10, 2.2 with 5 speed. Its an extended cab and hes gettin 24 with it so far, first tank, it has 140,000 on it though too.

I've always been a fan of S-10s. I test drove one years ago that had a 4 banger, can't remember if it was a 4 or 5 speed.Anyways, reg cab short box, 2wd. This thing would haul ass!! It would leave a killer patch in 1st, and then grab rubber in every gear after that. I was only 18, and test driving it, didn't really care about much back then....but I don't think the gas gauge moved the whole time we had it...

My brother has a '99 Sonoma, 250k+ miles, 2.2, 5 spd....he gets about 22 with his.

Have to say I'm pretty skeptical that they can get 30 mpg.

why not? Its a little 4 cylinder in a light weight truck. I won't have any tool boxes or ladder racks and its doubtful that I would ever really carry much in the bed.

I don't think it's worth the power loss to go with a 4cyl. When my '91 was in a little better running condition, I could easily get 26-27 mpg on the highway. It's a 2wd 4.3 5speed, regular cab/long bed. Currently I'm getting 18-20 mpg driving to work every day (city/highway mix). It's a great little truck that is very useful, gets good economy, and is also fun to drive to boot.
