s10 or K5

My stock K5 could go waayyy more places than my slightly modded s-10 ever could. The only things cheaper on a s10 is tires and gas.

But for just dirt trails , no mud , sand or rocks you`ll be ok.As for camping its hard for 1 person to sleep in the back too.Even with the deat down you cant carry as much.

i notice govliquidation never has the keys if the truck may run or not

The keys are universal on the CUCVs. I have two and either key will fit in either truck. If you can find one, just have it copied. FWIW both mine came with keys. It wasn't an issue.

Corey - S10's suck.. go full size. S10's are cramped, the mileage isn't much better than a full size, they're harder to work on 'cause you've got less room to swing wrenches, and half the damn thing is metric, thus every job that would be simple on a full size takes twice as long to accomplish.

Buulllllshh***t

Only standard stuff on my blazer are the lug nuts and sparkplugs:rolleyes:

Yours is a 96 right?

mine was an 87..it had a mix of sae & metric on it..if yours is free of indiscriminate assembly practices, good for you. My experience was otherwise.

i wheeled circles around a mildly built 89 s10 in my stock 81 k5. he was always having trouble and it got 15 on a good day. this is my math; newer s10- $250/mo+ ~$100 gas +$80 insurance= $430/mo old k5- $0/mo+ 150 gas+ $50 insurance= $230/mo you will pay it all up front right? monthly payments suck.
i figure the total expense for an old beater would be cheaper then a newer ride. yeah, listen to me, i drive a 99 yukon, cheap on gas, and easy on the eyes and not cheap. oh well, monthly payments make me remember how much i love it.

i really want a 5/4 ton cucv. (the m1028 right?) Id only spend the time and moneys if i knew there was a strong possibility of it being in running condition. I figure my parents wont mind because i would use it to replace my stepdads little itty bitty ford ranger 2wd pos.

Damn man that sucks. Its bad enough fumbling with 5 or 6 sockets i can imagine 10 or 12

For the record, just about every '80's to early '90's S10 Blazer (or Olds Bravada) I have ever dealt with (6-7) would unlock and start with just about any Chevy key I had. My K5 keys have unlocked/started 5 of them.

Get the K-5.... find an 87 or newer with TBI and go from there. Gas mileage will only be a little less than an S-10, but aftermarket parts are much cheaper, and working on them is a breeze.

If you want good gas mileage in a 4x4.. get a yota.. just be prepared to pay out the ass for one that even sorta runs and is mostly rust.

but

The only capable S10s I've seen are ones where the S10 body is on a K5 or other full size frame and running gear. And they're not nearly as cool!

i love the way a s10 blazer looks w/fullsize axles:D, but your prolly needin a driver now and doin the sas or bodyswap to fullsize frame would take a little while and like i said your prolly needin to ride in it now!

go k5!...have patience...look for a good 90-91 w/4.3L and a standard tranny, that combo looks good and should click off pretty good mpg #'s! i want this setup myself to build a mall cruiser, so i'm biased, but def. go fullsize k5! if you don't, later on you'll prolly be sayin you wish you had!

strong 2nd, the diesel cucv! already 8 lugs(iirc), th400/np205(again iirc) and good mpg...only thing the cucv's prolly/possibly had a hard life, but military does maintainance on vehicles like clockwork! again go k5!!!:waytogo:

well i will be the first one to defy "conventional" wisdom. my vote is for the s10.

i have beat the living piss out of my 89 blazer. when it was bone stock (street 235/75's and all) i was able to follow my dads k5 (doubler/1 tons/42's) places that none of us thought i could go. they are very capable rigs stock, in the hands of a good driver, should be able to do anything a stock k5 will. after i jumped a 4' log and shattered my back window (still stock, and following dad's k5), i decided to see what it would do when pushed. i would consider it stock or at least mostly stock though it didnt look stock anymore. i cut the top off, removed the doors, welded the rear end, and cut the fenders to fit 32's tsls. this thing was amazing, and the only issue i ever had was a broken rear shaft (i was asking for it). they have a stout t-cases, commonly the same transmissions as full sizes, can come with the same axle as a full size, a flat belly stock, and decent power for their size. best of all, i had $350 in it, and it was mechanically perfect (and looked good before i got it).
