Didn't get back here as quick as I wanted. Been out knocking down trees..........
Actually Turkey season is almost upon me, and I have been going to bed early to try to get ready.
Plus I'm breaking ground for spring planting, and had a few electronic calls, so I've been busy.
That winch would have no problem handling that bumper, or the whole truck if need be.
I like the space on the sides for standing on to work on the engine. Plus it serves as a place to sit when looking for tracks on a hard road.
My old '79 had a similar setup, but the bumper part was only 3 inch channel iron. Still had the 12,000# PTO winch though.
It was shaft driven, and did not have any stall point. Since this one is hydraulic, I have the pressure bypass set so that it will not quite break the cable with a full spool. One layer down, it snaps it like string.
I had intended to make a 3 inch wide bumper like my old truck. But Fords of that vintage came with a really wide chrome bumper.
When I took it off, and put on a mocked up 3 inch, you could see everything under the truck.
Parts of the frame, spring shackles, Dana44, it looked like it did not have a bumper on it.
There was a piece of 8 inch wide, 3/8 inch or maybe a little thicker, channel iron laying in the shop.
I picked it up, laid it on the thin piece and backed off. It looked perfect. Covered up all the naughty bits and looked good.
Since I had ordered the truck with the snowplow package, when I got the winch and bumper mounted, it brought the front end down perfectly.
I have had extra strong bumpers and PTO winches on every off-road vehicle I have owned, but I have never managed to use them like I did on the first one.
It was a '60 model CJ-5 Jeep with a Konig PTO winch and dual rear wheels. Since back then, I would regularly cross streams up to my navel several times a day, I really needed to grease the U-Joints on a regular basis.
But, where we hunted and camped, was almost always a wet muddy swamp. I hated crawling under.
One day, I had had enough. I tossed the cable over a massive oak limb, tied it off at the bottom and put the winch in gear.
The winch lifted the front end up until the carb ran out of fuel.
Since it was a PTO worm drive, and I had a 6 volt starter on a 12 volt system, I just left the transmission in first, and started cranking.
As soon as the tailgate touched the ground, I climbed out and stood there greasing everything under the Jeep.
Most everything was at chest height.
Then I climbed back in, put the transmission in reverse, and cranked the jeep back down on it's wheels.
I have never been able to do that with either of my two trucks over the years, since they have automatic transmissions.
I have not had the adventures with the newest bumper I had with the old 3 inch one. I hit an 8 point buck at about 70 early one morning.
Ironically, I was on my way deer hunting, and was running late. He crossed the highway in front of me, and I was just wondering if I might get a shot, when he came tearing back across and I hit him broadside.
Bumper shrugged off the hit. His head flew up and one antler point dented the chrome trim around my grill.
Then he went under the truck rolling. When I got stopped and went back, I was able to fold him up like a suitcase in the back of the truck.
Literally every bone in his body was pulverized. I thought we might be able to feed him to the dogs, but when we tried to skin him out, the skin fell off, and he looked like a porcupine with all the bone splinters sticking out all over.
We threw him away, afraid the dogs would get stomach punctures.
Then there was the lady in the Cadillac who hit the gas instead of the brake and backed into that bumper in the parking lot at about 40.
She did not see me watching her from the store, slammed it in gear and tried to drive off.
Car would not move for a second, then finally did. The problem was her bumper was wrapped around mine, and she tore it off trying to get away.
I called the police, gave them her bumper complete with tag, and asked them to return it to her.
When they asked, I declined to press charges, since my truck was undamaged. Actually got a little quality Cadillac paint on my spray can painted bumper. Looked good........
BTW, this is what me, my truck, and bumper will be after this Saturday.............
I have heard him gobble three mornings in a row now. Saturday a sexy young thing, or so he thinks, will answer him.......
