saftey kill switch

my key switch is broken so i want to put a kill switch on it so that when it's in gear at school or work one of my dumb a$$ friends doesn't get in and try starting it and run somebody over. the problem 87 k10 has ALOT of wires running to the column... so can anyone help me and tell me what wires i should splice into for the kill switch.

if my "friends" every stole my truck(s)...let's just say i wouldn't be very good-natured about it. . get new friends who respect your property. problem solved.

and to answer your question, tapping into the circuit at the fuse box is nice and easy since it's labeled. you know exactly what circuit you're getting into. switching the fuel pump circuit works, too. they can crank it til the battery dies, but it won't fire up with no fuel.

it's not so much my friends i worry about it's more the people that have problems with me and who i am. most people in the school don't mess with me because i believe in double the payback at all costs and have grown up with them my whole life. but there are allways those few people that just don't respect you.

ok i fear that when driving down the road that i will hit the kill switch and loose power steering and brakes. so would it be better to tap into say the fuel rather than the key switch?

if you lose fuel, the truck will still die. the place I'm having you place the switch is between the key and the starter. the truck will run just fine if it gets flipped while driving, but it won't start w/o it.

ive always cut the main wire going to the distributor for the HEI.

and you can pull the "i ran out of gas" technique

if you went w/ the fuel option you could go with an electric fuel pump (assuming '87's still had a MFP)... then just hide a switch for it wherever you want... BUT someone could still get in and burn up the starter and drain your battery by cranking away forever w/o any fuel...

I have a kill switch under the carpet where the hi-beam button is on the old trucks... I never hit it with my foot but my dad did once and it sucked... losing power steering and brakes on 38.5's is no bueno so just be careful whatever you decide to do.

Or just fix the key switch.

Not trying to be a smart ass, but 12 bucks at partsamerica.com, and an hour or two swapping seams easier to me than rigging a kill switch.

If you're that paranoid about someone messing with your truck why not just pull a fuse that will render the truck dead? Theres gotta be one for the ignition or some other essential circuit.

I agree fixing the ignition is an obvious option but at the same time having a kill switch in place is a GREAT poor-man's alarm...

My High school was in one of the worst parts of town and if I was there at night or early in the morning when there weren't police cars on campus (yeah it was that bad) then I hit my switch that way even if they broke in they couldn't start it...
When you drive a big noisy lifted truck (especially after I started dumping money into my stereo) its amazing how much attention it can draw even for a 20+ year old truck...its nice peace of mind IMO...

it's not that i'm paraniod,it's more of one of those looky looky what i did your truck doesn't have this and the kids i go to school with don't know s*** about trucks but i got alot of $$ in the truck and sound system. the kids around here wouldn't rip stuff outa my truck cuz they can't figure out how to install it themself so if they can't start it and drive away it proby won't happen. never thought of it untill now but i got the left/right gas tank switch i could flip but last time my friend hit it with his knees it took me 5 hours to figure out the switch was on the wrong tank.
