My old CUCV has gotten to where the door drags pretty badly on the striker. When you push the button or pull the lever to open the door, it just sits there until you shove it open. The body is rough all around and this is pure work truck at this point, so the fix doesn't need to be great. My first thought was to just lower the striker, but come to find out it's already maxed out downward... I remember a guy many years ago talking about jacking up under the door to bend stuff up, but that seems pretty harsh. Any suggestions for getting this thing back to semi normal function?

Hinge pins worn out. Replace hinges or pins. You should be able to lift the open door and look at the hinges and see the slop.

Yeah,if the hinges are not badly hogged out beyond the bushing hole..

You can also add shims to the bottom hinges after replacing the hinge bushings if they are bad (and I've yet to see a square body that has tight bushings!)--that will raise the door up more, you may need to compensate on the top hinge in the same way to keep the door aligned to the windshield pillar..
I'd save jacking the door up as a last ditch resort--old doors like to rot around the hinges,so do the cowl, they could tear out if that method is used too aggressivly.

How painful is the install? Do the doors come off the truck, or can it be done in place?

I've done them with the doors on,but had to rig up a way to support them when you go to take out the upper hinge pin..
I used my engine crane, and have used things like rope and a tree branch or floor jack for that..
I avoided loosening or removing the hinge to door bolts to avoid losing shims and the alignment, usually once the bushings are replaced the door shuts good again and may only need minor striker bolt tweaking..

Doors can also crack where the hinge bolts to. So look for that. My 1st blazer had this issue. I ended up swapping doors and hinges. But not before a friend didn't check his door and the door swung wide open as I turned into traffic!

It's not a difficult job to replace. If you can find a helper to hold the door, knock the old pins out to remove the doors, then you'll have more room to work.
TAKE PICTURES BEFORE YOU START!

Actually, if you drill a 1/8” hole through the hinge and door jam you can use that for alignment. Then you can remove the door to allow easy access. When you rehang the door just stick the drill bit back through the holes to make it line up again.
