Sam's 86 K5 Cross Country Build (11/3/13)Hydro Assist, X-over, and longer wheelbase)

Just got it at el harbor freight, wanted to see the departure angle i get. Headed to URE. This time is a little differewnt setup, I got a foam "pad" for the rear of the truck, so the carrier allows me some extra room. Backseat is out. Since i'm not getting there till 10PM and its muddy, I was hoping to make it a quick pull into the camp and be able to sleep. We'll see if it really works that well.

Well guys, I know it's been slow going but I have actually gotten some stuff done to the K5 this season and I will have some pics this weekend when it is all done.
New shackles all around that are 1 inch longer, moved the front axle forward 1.5 inches, and the rear back, 1.5 inches. Crossover steering and hydro assist are going on this weekend, chromoly shafts were put in, and a new front driveshaft to account for the lengthening of the wheelbase. Once I finish this round of mechanical additions, it is time for some body work, and then moving on to a new paint job+front bumper additions to the DIY4X winch cradle.

Got around to getting some pictures, I didn't have time to get the ram mounted yet because I have yet to find a way to add more PS fluid capacity without it being a total hack-job. Headed to the junkyard this afternoon to hopefully score a remote reservoir and some adapters.

First up, thanks to barnes 4wd for the beefy shave cover. I tried to put a rock through this thing last time out, and failed.

Got the ORD brace installed also, and used it as an excuse to mount up the new ported box from PSC.

Kurt's beefy rear shackles have rounded out the entire rear suspension. I think I am finally done with the rear end now.

Moved the front axle forward and leveled out the front with the EZ-inch

Here are some random pics of the crossover steering, I am sure people have better pictures out there of the install, I had to do some minor trimming on the engine crossmember, and I just eyeballed it for now, I am hoping to get out on the ramp at the local shop this week and see where it is going to need more trimming.
And the first one is some synthetic line so no one gets hurt while winching. :D

Since the Pic whoring is on, here are some random wheeling pictures, some in California , some out here in NC.

Not sure it's a big deal or not, but you have those ez-inch blocks installed wrong.

Yes, and they're supposed to be centered on the axle pad.

Oh, it looks like I actually put the pin in the forward hole and the nut in the center hole, and that left me with the ex-inch not centered on the spring plate. I think I did that because my spring plates are not drilled and I just had a brain fart and decided that was the easy/only way i could get it to work.
Anyone think that is a problem? I can say that the entire ez-inch is secure, and its on the spring pad.
I really don't want to take this off again unless its a bad thing to have. Mainly I don't want to have to go borrow all the jack stands and jacks from friends.

Eh, I don't know. You'd probably be ok for now, just keep an eye on it and make sure it stays tight.

So the only problem I see here is that the ez-inch is not centered on the perch like it should be, but there isn't any part of the perch that is not covered by the ez-inch.
The good things I have going for me are:
Springs and ez-inch are bolted together, so its not a front block.
The Spring plate is directly centered like it should be over the leaf spring and axle.

Being an engineer I should know if this is safe or not, but I'll wait to hear from others for guidance.

UPDATES! Big ones!

Randomly found a D60 built up with 4.56 and welded with 35 splines on craigslist. I couldn't resist at the price of 700$, so I went for it. Also ended up with some H2 wheels and then someone wanted to buy my Km2's. So i figured why not do a huge makeover and just put it all in at once. I went through the D60 and cleaned it up as best I could, kingpins, greased all the bearings and lockouts. It all looks good. Installed a HD diff cover and then time to throw it under the truck! Pics show the progress, then some flexing pics to test out the suspension moved 1.5 inches forward. then also at the tire store with the H2s and 37's. It looks like the front is way high. its not. I just took a funny picture on my phone. I'll get some better ones soon.

I feel your 1500$ 10 bolt pain. Mine is sitting under the rearend of my truck on Craigslist to hopefully cover the price of a decent 60 that I can put the remaining funds into to bulletproof the front end so I can really do something dumb with it.

Whoa thought I was one of the few with K5 in triangle area! Guess being new to the scene there are more out there then I knew about. Hopefully I can get mine right and lifted to enjoy this spring down in Troy. Nice ride by the way there looks well built!

Well, I have a few updates to add since it has been about 2 and a half years since I have posted in this one. Have done an ARB and chromos in the front, and the interior has gotten a lot of love with new seats and gauges. Pics soon to come!

So I got a Jeep Cherokee as a "cheap" wheel toy and something to take to the beach and camp in. I can't seem to leave anything alone, so that took up a lot of my time and got a ford 8.8 rear end, long arm suspension, 35's, lockers, and some armor.

After that I decided to focus back on the K5 a little, it felt neglected and needed some new parts. Decided to do a gauge swap and get with the modern LED craze.

After that, new seats were needed to replace the work out, cig burned stockers.

Then I got a softopper, some new ORD front springs (to push the axle forward 2 inches) and 1 ton driveshafts. Waited to enjoy the warm months here, and went to test it out

I have been on a fabrication kick here recently since I got a plasma cutter, and decided to put it to use, and make some tire carriers for the fleet.
