I have a 72 Blazer with a SB400 and a TH400 transmission. I will be using the Blazer for weekend cruising, trips to the beach (90 miles 1 way) with the family, and going to the hunting lodge. No heavy offroad use. I would like to upgrade to fuel injection and maybe a transmission 700r4. Will this help my gas mileage that much? Or should I sell the SB400 and go with a total conversion?

I still want power and towing ability, but would like to maximize mpg as much as possible.

Any suggestions?

I will be installing an A/C unit (Vintage Air) as it gets very hot in South Alabama with or without the top on! :)

Thanks

If it was my 72 Blazer, I would favor using the TBI system / transmission from the 93 - 95 GM Pickups that use the 4L60E (beefier electronic version of the 700R4) . The 93 - 95 computers are really PCM's (programmable engine control modules) which means the 4L60E shift points and torque converter lock-up is programmable. The PCM's from 93 - 95 are easy to tune for larger displacement engines like a SBC 400. The 93 - 95 PCM's can use better Data Logging software from DataMaster http://www.ttspowersystems.com/DataMaster.html

Now that I have said that ... My TBI 93 GMC K1500 modified with a TPI roller cam 5.7 Liter V8 gets 14 MPG with the 4L60E.

14 hwy right?

I don't often get to drive just HWY miles. My driving is a combination of some HWY, mostly Urban / Metro freeway slower than speed limit commuting during rush hours, and some city stop light to stop light. When I had a job (I'm now unemployed :() a 35 mile commute to work usually took 50 - 60 minutes.

My ZERO to 60 MPH time is just over 7 seconds with my TPI roller 5.7 liter.:D
