So my 72 K5 has a set of lightweight heads and needs a valve job, blowing a little smoke through seals etc. After a compression test I took them off and find the seats are about as far recessed as anyone would comfortably go and only if i used 2.02 valves in the 1.94 heads would they be salvageable.

On Craigslist I found a set of heads for $20. Well one is an 882 head the other is a 487. The local machine shop tells me he'll rebuild the 487 if he has a match for $400 or build me a set of 487x's for $450.00. Anyone have any similar stories?

BTW the deal is done - the 1.94 heads will be either 487's or 487x's and will be ready on Wednesday night completely rebuilt with all new parts and Stainless valves etc.

Also anyone have any experience experimenting w/plugs on 487's?

When you mean experimenting with plugs, do you mean heat range, brand....?

Yes heat range and or brand. - I only use AC Delco or ACCEL plugs and wires, (Accel is a Mr. Gasket company located and used to be manufactured in Carson City) some people are using R45TS, some use R44's, anyone want to chime in?

I always used to use Autolite 145 , which was Chevy small block truck and marine plug . These were in my old A/G bodies .

In the Blazer I primarily use delco now , but after a failed attempt at using Bosch , I went back to the Autolite 145 like I used to use in my cars .

Once i started using the NGK V-power plug i haven't used anything ever since and that's been about 20 some years ago.

What's the NGK plugs number; YR5? And what's so special?

I believe for my 89 they are a UR5. They last way longer than any plug i've ever ran. I've noticed a small increase in idle RPM's just from installing these plugs which means that it is helping the combustion process. I can take a plug out after 2 years of service and it looks just like the day i installed it.

Done

Finaly finished the most expensive - longest drawn out - head job ever :o Sorry that's just what it's called.

Turned her over last night and since it was after 10:00 and the garage is next to my kids' rooms I thought twice about starting it - but I went ahead and did it anyway.
