SBC Engine Rebuild guidance

The motor that is in my race car that has yet to blow up I bought as a core on E-bay for $90. Put new bearings in it same size as old ones. New cam and lifters. New rings and a set of high compression heads. total cost about $600 and it runs great, have more into the heads $300 the the rest of the motor. Have more into the clutch then the whole motor. If your motor ran before and had no major problems then you can make it run again with nomimal cost. Rings and bearings and the short block would be fine the hard parts don't wear out unless they wear out ie. blow or sieze. Cross hatch the cylinders and put it back together, new cam and lifters and I would probally get the heads redone or buy a set already done, it would be good to go. Line boring or even boring is a waste unless there was a problem to begin with.

After ready the posts on page two don't rebuilt the 4.3 its now worth it. Everything that is on the 4.3 will bolt to the 350 and you will have more motor, with less cost. You will have to buy some new stuff but worth it in the end

I was talking with the machine shop today giving them my final instructions, I asked them if they think It should be balanced, they said it's up to me, what he said exactly was "we do them all the time without balacing, it's not a requirment, especially on a daily driver, on a performance engine we would highly recommend it, but in your case it's probably not worthit, but it's up to you if you want it balanced, then balance it, $200 to do it".

This kinda of has me worried, they are not really recommending balancing, should that concern me? I told them to do it, but my concern is thier lack of concern.

What are the final instructions.....?

I assume your having them bore it and turn the crank.....yes?

Using a matched set of +.030" pistons, your rods and turning the crank .010" under wont warrant balancing in your case, the V-6 wont turn high enough to gain anything from it.
The matched set of cast pistons is close enough on the weight

let's say you stroked a motor with dished pistons, long rods for a small base circle cam and you had to grind all the rods for clearance.....now you gotta balance the reciprocating assy.

balancing a stock rebuild TBI V-6 is a waste of money IMHO.!

That thing is built for torque (or lack of) and will never see the high side of 5500rpm.

Instructions were:
tank
magnaflux (block,rods,crank)
bore
hone
defer to him on crank, he hasn't fully checked it yet, but grind it if it needs it.
defer to him on rods when he checks them

Mabey I'll tell him not to balance it.

Ok, cool deal...........if the crank is straight he can turn it,
if it aint then ya gotta replace the crank and possibly line-bore the mains

Have you ever rolled a warped cue-stick on a pool table, that's what a bent crank does in the main journals......wobble wobbble wobbbble

Good luck friend, keep us informed.
