So what's a good Scan Tool to buy to cover all vehicles? Or would I need several? Can I get but with laptop software?

I own, and regularly use an AutoXray Ez-Scan 6000. ( http://www.autoxray.com/product_detail.php?pid=94 ) I like the AutoXray for trouble shooting a Check Engine Light problem. I use my laptop with DataMaster TTS software ( http://www.ttspowersystems.com/DataMaster_downloads2.html ) to RECORD engine information to be able REPROGRAM a PROM Chip.

When I have an engine on a test stand ... I get more "WOW's" with the AutoXray. I think many people are more comfortable looking at a Scan Tool, then a laptop?

I've been looking at the Auto xray 7000, I gues the newer model. It comes with several cables but has a few more available. Have you found a need for more cables than supplied?

I have a pocket programnmer III USB that I use to burn chips. I use WinALDL, Tunercat and tunerPro for the chip end.

The AutoXray 7000 has some features my 6000 does not. I'm very satisfied with my AutoXray 6000:D, just wish the 7000 would have been available at the time I purchased my 6000.:doah: I tend not to work on vehicles I don't have a cable for, but if the the vehicle owner was willing to pay for the cable needed, then I'd buy the additional cable.

I have an older AutoXray that i bought about 10 years ago. I have been nothing but pleased with it. I orginally bought it to do GM obd1. I have upgraded it over the years to do Ford, Chrysler, and OBD2. Works good on all vehicles i have ever plugged it in to. Even VWs

Yep, AutoXray..... Awesome tool and you can even get a battery tester for it and that works great too!

Well I ordered a 7000 model... $350. We will see if if can help find those intermittent glitches that WinALDL can't find.

Both my dad an I own AutoXray scan tools. I have the simple but effective 3000 and he has the newer 6000 and they work great. Saved a many questions and troubleshooting problems using these tools. And you can update them with the new software updates online.

Bumping this thread from the dead.

My brother is having a couple of issues with his 2001 HD. One is the Cam position sensor which have been replaced but the truck is still throwing a code and it won't pass smog because of it. Second, His security system is starting to throw a fit and the first the tech manual suggest is hooking a scan tool. Will the AutoXray be able to pull codes for theft deterrent system?

Give me year make model engine trans etc... and I will see what options mine gives. I know on mine, some cars you can pick engine, trans, abs or even SIR...

2001 GMC K2500 HD with the 8.1 and Allison transmission. I forgot the transfer case. I think it is a NP261 part time case.

Just tryed for ya but I need six new aaa battries I don't have so maybe tomorrow.

First time this tool has failed me... 2 years... 20-30 cars, used at least 100 times and the dam batteries only last a year and a half... :doah:

I paid $350 for it but now I see them around $250. Either way best money I have spent on a tool. I here people tell me all the time that parts stores and even dealerships can't read OBDI. This does all OBDI and OBDII. records data, download to computer, update from internet which I need, I'm only good for any car to 2010 and it does my 1990 Suburban which is same as 1987...

Earier in thread Dave recomended the AutoXray 6000 but I found this newer 7000 model. Been wonderful... till the origanal battries died...

EDIT: Here's the link. MSP $649.! Look on Amazon for around $250ish...

I have been putting off buying a scanner since I hardly used one and I afraid of it going obsolete. Especially for one that cost a lot of money.
Just checked Amazon and the 7000 is going for $260. I may swing for it if it cost that much.
Still would like to know if the 7000 work with the Thief deterrent.

I don't know if it works for theft deterrent, but if you have a DROID phone you can get a $24 OBDII bluetooth adaptor and a $5 torque pro software and have a scanner for less than $30. I got that setup and it works better than I would have ever expected. I have plugged it into a 05 Trailblazer, 08 Cadillac CTS, 07 Mercedes sprinter van, 01 duramax, 06 duramax, 06 saturn, etc. It works in everything I have tried so far and I am very impressed with it. Don't know about theft deterrent though, but in addition to live data and customizable gauges it reads and clears every fault code I can think of.

That is cool! :D

Clearing codes is a funtion, yes it will clear all so don't be surprised at that. Also OBDII has a set of standardized codes. Then manufactures codes. It would still clear all, but may only show standard OBDII codes

But I have some doubts it would have all data that is avaialble? Same as above. Standard OBDII and then each manufactures OBDII codes. Standard does cover the majority. It simplified diagnostics when mandated by goverment.

Still way cool to do this with a phone for cheap! :woot:

Usually the P codes are pretty standard, however, you also have the option to click (web lookup) on every code, and it will take you to a website with the generic description of the code, and also manufacturer specific descriptions as well. I have been very impressed with it so far, not to mention that it's so cheap (assuming you already have the phone).

You can even set up graphs and do data logging, adn the list of data you can pull from is very long, I was even reading live fuel rail pressure on my fathers Dmax, up to 26000 psi.

Well I got battrys and looked up that truck. Has State OBD check, O2 monitor test, On Board systems test, Modules present but to go further than that have to hook it up. From previous experiance those extra test found everything like air bag module, trans module, ABS etc... didn't know it can duplicate state OBD test though!

Well I ordered the autoxray 7000 yesterday. We found the problem with security system, and it was stupid simple. It wasn't what we thought it was.

I know this is an semi old thread, but i was wondering how the Autoxray 7000 is working. I picked up a brand new one, still in the box from a closing shop in town for 100 bucks. It has all the wires, software the battery tester attachment and even the plastic on the screen. I'm working on a 98 GMC Sierra and trying to set the cam retard but i can't find it. I see all the other live data to include ignition timing. Does anyone know if this is the same thing as cam retard. The truck is at 31* ignition timing now. it starts great and runs great with a slight misfire at around 3000 rpms.

Still loving mine!

I'm not familiar with your truck, does it actually have a variable cam timing? I've never hooked up to a vehicle that did? :dunno:
