so im looking at getting a scanner and i see that they cover AM and FM frequencies so my questions is it possible to use a scanner as a radio? or do they even have speaker connections?

You need to be more clear in your verbiage.

What do you mean by "radio"?

You cannot use a scanner as a transciever.

You can use a scanner as a receiver (that's it's designed purpose).

What are you trying to receive? I have a Uniden BC-250D. Good scanner, but my main gripe is that I can't set the modulation modes on it. E.G., 28 MHz will always be FM, despite the fact that most amateurs on that frequency are using AM or SSB.

My handheld scanner has a headphone jack that I can use to drive a powered speaker.

well i never used one and am having a hard time finding basic information on them. im wondering if they can receive fm and am radio stations like a normal music type radio. or are those frequencies not applicable to scanners? pretty much looking to use a scanner as both a scanner and a radio for music. but i have a feeling that this is not possible.

FM radio is 88-107 MHz. If that's in the scanner's receive coverage, then you should be able to listen to it.

AM radio is ~ 1 MHz. A conventional scanner will be unable to receive AM radio. A "General Coverage Receiver" like the Icom R20 would be able to receive AM broadcast, but won't have any trunking capabilities like most scanners do.

They normally have headphone outputs (the handheld variety).

Mobile/Base scanners most likely have a speaker output. Check out the specifications and features of the scanner you're interested in.
