So my friend and I were going to junkyards yesterday, looking for a disc rear end for his S10. Pulled into the LKQ in daytona beach down here.

This jeep was parked out front, front a distance it looked good. Was set of 35's, spring over. ETc.

Then I got closer and saw this.

Please note: Two drag-links, looked like a factory one was cut. Then this butch ass job.

Also, check the spring perches...not fully seated, or welded.

All for the nice price of 5k!!

Well, the welds look pretty.....Is that a brake line hanging down rubbing on the shock?

Doesn't the lightning bolt weld bead make it OK though?:haha:

referring to the "crossover bar": I dont see any reason it wouldn't work ok. seems plenty strong, just not on par with mainstream method. combined with the other stuff though...

thats called a draglink. and NO its not ok.

its not about mainstream or not. its about right and wrong......safe and dangerous. that fails an automotive inspection. its not roadworthy.

Draglink.. duh..its been a long day.

Im interested to hear why/ how this will break and is unsafe. not agreeing or disagreeing, "it fails a vehicle inspection-therefore is unsafe" doesnt really answer that.

.

I should have been more clear. Im not talking freeway use, im talking offroad only.

ford connects their draglink to the tie rod with the same method.

It is adjustable,

I would imagine with enough force applied, there the area of the hacked tierod where the flatbar stops might bend. cant see that happening unless tires are wedged on a rock.

When that breaks off from the leverage of those tires , someones getting their own lightening bolts , and maybe a big buff boyfriend too :doah:

You should never, ever weld any steering part (pitman arm, tierod, draglink). Welds looking good does not mean that they are strong and properly done, or that plate being right quality of steel on that place to use.

It would bend long before it breaks though.

nope. welding mild steel plate to cast steering peices...............FAIL.

it'll break at the weld. And give me a break any dickhead with a welder and glue stuff together. how much of this kind of JUNK is done by a certified Journeyman Welder.

It belongs to MuddinManny.

Funny you should mention him. His truck is still at the auto craft shop here on Ft Hood(I have been here for almost 2 years and it has never moved). I drove by the other day and thought it was finally gone, but then saw that it had been repositioned and someone was working on it. I couldn't see who, but the mustang that followed him from the engine builder's place home was there next to it. Looked like they were trying to jump start it.

sure they are most all are cast steel. its not forged, not HTSR, not tubing. just crappy cast stuff. way cheaper to mass produce.

the more important point i think is that maybe.....MAYBE 1% of the sketchy steering CRAP you see around like this is done by a professional welder.

any douchbag can buy a welding machine and think hes a weld god master fabricator AND automotive engineer............ and start glueing junk like this together.

doesn't matter if its on the trail or on the street. junk is JUNK.

only thing on a tie rod that could possibly be cast is the wnd that houses the balljoint.

Seems to me you cant even weld to cast can you? I mean it doesnt even penetrate?

Furthermore, in my experience, cast metal just snaps rather than bends. Ive bent many a tierod in my day, Ive also welded gussets to them for hydro assist, steering stabilizers etc.
