Have a pull a part near by, I'm looking at the inventory and there are quite a few chevy trucks listed. The prices seem reasonable too.

It says no jacks, or torches allowed. Since i'm in the market for a rear end, that seems like two pretty important tools in the "rear end removal process"

Every junk yard i've been too is owned by the "good ole boys" Use any means nesacary to remove what ever part ya want kind of place.

Stock rear axles around here must have gold hid in them somewhere.

Disconnect everything from the rear diff, slid it out from under the truck, most of them are already propped up on something to raise the truck high enough to get under them easily.

Ya don't really need to cut everything off the diff to get it out.

Slide it out from under the truck and tell them you need forklift assistance to lift the diff, or borrow one of their flatbed carts.

yeh at the ones around here the tires are already off and they are propped up on steel wheels under the frame/bumpers (a steel wheel laying flat on the ground and another 'standing' inside that one, with the 2 welded together. Once you get the axle out, flag down one of the guys driving around on the forklift, and he'll pick it up and take it to a gate for you and most of the time will load it in the truck.

Make sure the vehicle is well supported before you get under there too!

If its not, have the forklift guy help you shore it up properly before you crawl under.

Copy that. On a side note, is there a simple way of knowing what gears are in the rear axle?

Vin code or a stamp somewhere to look?

If the donor truck still has the glovebox door it should have the gear ratio listed on it. Otherwise there should be a little metal tag on the differential somewhere. But IIRC, the yard guys drain all the fluids from everything before the truck goes into the yard and if your lucky, they'll have the ratio written down in yellow marker on the cover.

dont count on the glove box door being correct. too much stuff gets swapped around on these trucks over the years. Like previously said a good yard will have the ratio written on the cover.

I wish
most of the time it's only the radiator and oil pan

Well I know at least the PnP yard in Sparks where I used to live had guys that drained all of the fluids. I bought a tranny from there once to put in my GF's car and her brothers came over and put it in while I was at work. They got it in and took it for a test drive and it burned up because neither one bothered to check to see if it had any gear oil in it. It was probably just as much my fault because I didn't check it but I never thought they'd be that dumb.

I've seen some dangerous stuff at pull a parts. They only hold the vehicle up by three welded rims. Several vehicles have fallen. I won't get under neith one with out putting tires on and adding more support underneath.
