Ok school me on the 93 an up Suburban’s
I want 4x4 2500 with Manual shift 4wd (no push buttons)
Engine doesn’t matter but I prefer gas. I would prefer as little computer controlled as possible. I want the 4L80 trans.
I know I want Heavy duty for towing, I have seen some pics of 2500 that looked like they have 6 lug wheels. Is this true or I’m I seeing things I want 8 lugs for sure.
So what years should I be searching for?
What should I look for when looking at a used?
Can I put 285/75 or 315/75-16 without a lift? If I do how much? I want as little a lift as possible.

Ok. 92 to 99 is the body style you are talking about. Only the 2500 (3/4ton) burb's are 8 lug, and all 2500's with auto's have the 4l80e.

92-94 were all manual shift xfer cases, but some up to 99 were still manual.

92-95 was Throttle body injection, 96-99 was a Vortec motor that made more power with multiport injection.
95-99 is the newer interior.

You can BARELY fit 285/75/16's on STOCK backspacing wheels w/o lift.

Truthfully, the vortec doesn't have THAT much more electronic stuff, and makes better power. I would not narrow your search down too much, just look for a 2500 burb, and see what it is. Most are 454's, with a few 350's and diesels thrown in there.

The percentage of 2500 burb's sold in the 90's is way lower than the 80's, and those that ordered them worked them hard. Most have high miles.

So keep your search open, and find one in the condition you want it in. I recommend craigslist and ebaymotors.

Good luck.

Thank Darren, That is the info I needed.

I love your Suburban BTW..... I wish I could find a nice one like that..

Thanks man.

I had a 94 blazer, my parents had a 96 burb, and i had a 97 burb breifly. The 92-99's have way better highway manners than my old 91. I can tolerate the 91 cause i am driving a BMW when i don't need a truck. The main reason i sold hte 94 blazer was the fact that high mileage 92-99 IFS trucks wear out the front ends. I just couldn't get it to drive/handle/behave like it did for so many years. There are SO many parts that wear out in the front end of those trucks. If you aren't picky, you will enjoy it. But having a high mileage IFS truck and wanting it to drive/handle/sound like new sounds expensive to me. But i am a picky SOB.

After doing some more reading it looks like chevy did build a (92-99) 6lug 2500, it's also came with a 4L60e(700R4). it's basicly a 1/2 with 14bolt rearend(non full floater).

I thought there might be some of those. Main reason to get the 3/4 is for the trans, so don't get a 6 lug version.

It was called a heavy half, built to try and be a comfy family trailer haulin' ride.

Like Darren said, vortec is not that much more in the way of computers, but they are far ahead of tbi. For some reason, 99 was a year it seemed the general got things right.

Ditto on the high miles thing, it's really annoying:doah:

Check the link in my sig to see what 265's on 17's look, I have been more than happy with them, and don't have to worry about fender trimming or whatnot. That being said, I would like to lift it 2" if someone actually makes a decent small lift for these things. I want to lift it so that it can sit how a truck should.

LS and base models will be your only bet for manual shift t-case, as the LT models had leather and all that good stuff. And in any year you buy, check to see that the Center Axle Disconnect works, when mine dies, I'm going to replace it with a posi-lok.

The 4l80 is a 3/4 ton only tranny.

Do NOT put deep offset wheels on unless you want to replace everything steering/bearing related :doah: The engineers designed the bearings to run with a certain backspacing, and if you mess with it, things will go to pot, ask me how I know:doah: That is why I just bought old police wheels for it. I still need to address the steering components.

That's about all I can think of right now.

This was not always the case. Some LT's got a manual shift transfer case. No real explanation, but they are out there.

Pickups only. Suburbans were only 2500's with 8 lug 3/4 ton stuff. No dressed up 1/2 tons.

It was called the 2500LD's in the pickups.

Be aware though, the 14FF rear axle is rarer than the 8 lug 14SF in the Suburban 2500's of this vintage.

But unless you plan to tow REALLY heavy loads, its not a big deal . The SF brakes are almost as big, if not the same as the FF. I've loaded the crap out of my 3/4 ton wiht the semi float, and no issues.
