I am just wondering the major differences and what are the pros and cons of each, best application for each.
And/or which is your favorite to use and why
Thanks
Tom

depends entirely on what you want to do with it.

Th350 is a 3speed with a high gear of 1:1, its pretty strong and parts are cheap.

Th400 is a 3 speed with again a 1:1 ratio for high gear. its very strong, and a little more expesnive to build than a TH350.

Th700r4 is a 4 speed with a 4th gear ratio of I think .72:1. in stock form they are pretty weak. they are kinda spendy to build, but with quality parts and a builder who knows what they are doing they can hold up pretty well. A BIG auxillary cooler is a requirement, along with proper TV adjustment for them to live. A temp gauge wouldnt hurt either.

Basically which is better oranges or apples.

the 350 & the 700 have similiar guts. The 400 is much beefier. The 700 also has a 3.06:1 first gear as well as overdrive. The 350 has a 2.52:1 first & the 400 has 2.48 first gear.

The 400 is 3-4" longer bell to tail than the 350. I think the 700 is close in length to the 400.

Tell me what you want to do with the rig and I can vote in the poll.

I run a th350 in my rig because that is what it came with and it took quite a bit of work to destroy it. I now have a th400 at my parents place I will put in the 'burb should the "built" 350 in it now go south.

I wouldn't run a 700 in a rig as heavy as mine with the way I drive but my buddy has one in a c5 and loves it.

T-400.....strength...easy to build....lots of aftermarket parts...

never met anyone that is just real happy with their 700r4.....
especially after their 3rd or 4th rebuild....

met plenty of people that abuse their T-400 and are still going strong...

Like has been said it all depends.

I have a turbo 350. I don't think the 400 is much of an advantage in a lighter truck. In a heavy truck sure, but not in a lighter crawler. 400 planetarys are bigger take more power to get em spinning, but the clutches are nearly the same size as on a 350.

For a lighter truck that is mostly off road. TH 350. Heavier truck TH 400

For something that is street driven a 700 for the overdrive. The 700 still suffers somewhat of a bad rap, I have seen some that have been built by pros, that are not done right. clearances must be checked, end play has to be set etc.

I have a TH 350 in my crawler, and a 700 in my DD. My tow rig will have a 465 because I think its a better choice than a 400 for a tow rig

Well, you haven't talked to me about mine then. I had my trans buddy build mine about 8 years ago and i've been beating the piss out of it ever since and haven't had a single failure yet. Of course I did have him put the best of the best parts in it when he built it. Everyone that has riden in my truck always comments on how the trans shifts and wants to know what trans it is and then they don't believe me when I tell them it's a 700R4.

No doubt that a built 700r4 can be a great trans, but stock, I've not known anyone to have good luck with them.

In fact, in the past month, I've had two friends (both with k5s) experience trans failure in one form or another. Both 700r4s.

Makes me REALLY happy that mine came with a SM465...
