it's a 73 blazer - hacked wiring. got the lights all working today, but can't figure out how to wire up the starter to the switch (properly). what's the deal?
yeah, kinda. the wiring that goes down to the starter has been hacked off - so i've got about 5 wires that are cut, plus the proper wires for connecting to the alternator.
You should have a purple wire which comes from the ignition switch down to the "S" terminal of the starter (closest to the block), there should also be a red wire that goes on the large starter lug along with the positive wire from the battery.
pic. the green wire on the left: ignore. it's tied there for no reason. dunno what it does. i presume the wires you say i need to hook up are the fat red one and the purple one with the blue tip. what are the other three wires there - the black, tan and yellow ish?
That green wire is for the temp sensor, purple for "S" terminal on starter, red for large starter lug, not sure on the others. There are 3 wires that the ends aren't shown, are those hooked up somewhere?
those three go to the alternator. that green wire has that funky spade that you can see, and then the other end of it looks like alternator wiring. it doesn't actually attach to anything - i don't think it's the temp sensor. i think my temp sensor wire is brown. is that possible on a 73? the brown temp sensor?
Every GM temp sensor wire in cars and trucks that i've ever seen all the way back into the early 60's vehicles use a green temp sensor wire. It's possible that it could be for AC, the compressor end of the wire looks like an alternator connector.
I do believe one of the wires (the yellow one maybe?) goes to the "R" terminal. The 1973 still had a points distributor, therefor to provide more power to the coil during start up, there was a wire running to the "R" terminal.
You know something, I just remembered the wiring harness goes over the top of the motor, connect to the alternator and other stuff, goes down the front of the motor, then back to the starter, and a single wire for the fuel sending unit goes to the back.
Are you running the wiring harness behind the motor?
