For me anyway.
Free engine hoist. Been wanting one for a while now. Didn't particularly NEED one for the past 8 years (I've rented a towable 6 times in the past) But with my future engine swap plans I've found myself in need again.

I asked everyone I knew if there was a hoist out there I could borrow. Last minute I asked a neighbor. He said he was SCRAPPING this one cause his work couldn't certify it anymore and coworkers never took it home. I WANT I WANT!!! :rotfl:

Worked fine few years ago and then pushed to the side. Cleaned up good. Dunno the brand, got some booger weld here and there, might be "homemade", dunno. It's a beast. When I finish with it I'll probably cut the upright off and add a mounting plate so it can be disassembled for storage.

Before I cleaned it some, I didn't notice any leaks or mud under the ram. I tried pumping but there's no resistance and no movement. I pulled the fill plug out and it seems really low. I can hear fluid when I pick up the boom but the hole is dry. I don't know where fluid goes if there's no leak. I'm hoping a bottle fills it up and all is good. I'm also unfamiliar of the brand of this ram. If it's good and worth rebuilding if there's an issue, then I'll do just that. Otherwise an air/Hydrolic from HoboFreight looks tempting.

Is an 8 ton ram better than this 3 ton? Or would it just move slower?

Ok, ramble off. Wondering what ya'll think. Never put oil in a ram before, need to buy some first :D How much is needed? A quart?

Stoked :D

Air draulic is cool, but I am not sure I'd use one on an engine hoist. The capacity has more to do with the boom and base than the ram size. Yep that plug with the extension pointing at it is the fill. Fill it to the bottom of the hole, with the ram collapsed. See what happens. Chain up some heavy, lift it a foot ,and wait and see.

Score!

I run the Harbor Freight air over hydraulic ram on my tubing bender. Works well and plenty strong. It would probably be a good option if the pump leak is hard to fix. Great score, looks like a strong hoist.

Searching for seals. No scoring, so that's good.
Also, I ratchet strapped the boom to the leg and pumped until I felt sorry for the strap. Held tension for 5min :dunno:

Take that o-ring and the shaft it goes on ( so they can measure it directly ) to an industrial supply house like Motion Industries ( or something similar ) - you’ll have much better luck finding the correct type, size and material.

I will search my area :waytogo:

Is the end of the plunger something that needs replacing? Feels like nylon and very hard rubber. Not sure if the black area is supposed to be malleable, like a flat O-ring, or hard.

I had an old engine hoist the worked but leaked a little over time and I was helping someone clean up their shop before selling the house to move to Florida, he had a new harbor freight hoist and asked if I wanted to take it, silly question... yes I took it then he says he rebuilt this 454 gen V and asked if I wanted it too.
Of course I took it

Now a few years back I was helping Aaron @dremu and he gave me a new 8ton ram air/hydro from harbor freight and last week I decided it was time to put it on my old hoist.
Now I have one at home and one at the yard

That's funny timing. I was looking for one of these for a couple years now to go with my other engine stand thats old school rotate by hand. But they cost sometimes $765 now!

Anyway, Sunday one popped up, with an engine hoist, for $150! Used once, like new! So I bought it that morning, and then a day later I sold the engine hoist, for $150!

So it was free....
