Anyone ever Scrap there stock cat converter off there blazer? Anyone know how much you could get.
I recently went to a few scrap yards and they wouldn't take it.
I'm in North Jersey.

I thought they didn't take em anymore to cut down on theft. At least most places won't. May have to find a ghetto recycler

Hopefully you aren't just scrapping it for money, and removing it from your system.

A properly functioning Cat isn't that restrictive to your exhaust system, and its a huge fine if you get caught removing federally mandated emissions equip.

I ran w/o one temporarily after some issues with mine, but not for long.

No it's off a truck I stripped.

Got it. In my understanding, its more the new, expensive ones that pull a lot for scrap value.

New Toyotas, i'd guess lexus, BMW, etc.

They have some FANCY expensive cats, and the computer isn't happy with a generic replacement.

So wait a minute...they are worth money for the metals inside, they won't take them, and they are an item that does fail. How exactly is one supposed to get rid of them? Is there a program that allows shops to turn them in? There has to be some kind of program that allows getting rid of them.

You can just throw them away. He is trying to sell it for profit. That's the difference.

I have a scrap yard near me that will buy them, but, it seems they only buy from regular customers, not everyone :dunno:. The last one i sold them was from an 01 ram I scrapped, I think I got $60 or so....that was about a year or so ago.

Hey said they wouldn't take it, you are right, would be interested to know if they said go away, or just said "we will take it, but we won't pay you for it".

Place I go to for getting rid of scrap metal advertises they pay for them, but they keep a copy of your drivers license in case someone turns in a bunch of stolen stuff. Never tried to get money for a converter.

Yea most places don't want them. One guy offered 10 bucks but I've gotten 20 for small aftermarket ones. I'll save till I go to my usuall guy, just wanted to see if anyone had gotten good money for them. Thanks

As big a deal as they were making people stealing them to be, I would have figured they would be worth a bunch more.

The big flat ones that were used in 70's and 80's are worht around $100, Last newer cat I scrapped off a 93 s-10 I got $50 for

Scrapyards here buy them, you'll have to provide a license, phone # and adress ,and your trucks plate # to scrap anything at them now though, due to crackheads cashing in everything from stolen copper flashing off churches,to stolen catalitic converters and anything else they can steal..A Toyota dealer right in front of my house has had 39 converters swiped last summer...Most "aftermarket" converters are worth 10 bucks or less,as they dont have much platinum in them--same goes for an OEM one thats had most of its contents removed or blown out from high mileage...some imports have ones that bring 100+ bucks, but good luck getting anyone to pay what its worth, they want to lowball "average joes" who walk in and dont do bussiness there on a daily basis....they figure your a doper ,and stole it,and just want it GONE,and will take whatever they offer...an unfair, but common practice..I took a '74 Chevelle cat in to scrap at a nearby place a few years ago--I got 17 bucks for it!..then I found another one lying in my woods identical to it off a '73 GMC I had,and I gave it to a friend who scraps cars there just about daily...he got 96 bucks for it,and the prices for platinum were no higher than they were the day I hauled the other one in!...so,its who you know,or knows YOU,that determines the end price you'll get...what sucks is I had a half dozen of those big old GM ones stashed away, but I had to cash them in long ago when they were worth only 20 bucks...today they are worth about 75-85 bucks I'm told..:doah:

They let me scrap them, but I haul iron in on a fairly regular basis.
