I have a 1989 K5 and it's had a ticking noise in the engine since I bought it in November. I don't drive it much. Winter is dying down here in Kansas finally so today I decided to see what the ticking was. Suspected loose rocker and was correct. Reset all my rockers, got it all back together and went to fire it up and it started for a second and died. Checked fuses and made sure I was getting fuel, etc etc. All it would do is just crank and wouldn't even try to start. Tore it all back apart, did my valves again and same thing. Any ideas?

Check anything else you had off or open when you ran the valves, including the firing order

Dump some fuel down the carb or throttle body and then see if she fires or sputters If she doesn't, then check for power to the distributor. There are some fusible links in there too, against the firewall. Just not sure of the wiring diagram for an 89.

Only thing I took off was alternator and valve covers. I did repair one of the wires on the alternator.

It's getting fuel and spark. Guess I'll loosen up the rockers a 1/4 turn and see what it does.

Yeah, I would loosen the rockers up a couple turns each and turn the engine over a couple dozen revs to pump up the lifters again. Sounds like they might be too tight.

Got it fixed yesterday. Ended up backing them off a 1/4 turn each, unplugged my injectors, cranked it over and it fired. I think it was a combination of having them too tight the first time, it being a little flooded and a little too tight the second time. Plugged my injectors in, put it all back together and drove it around all evening. Runs perfect now. Thanks for your help guys.
