I'm not having much luck finding information on swapping in a 5.3 V8 into my K20. Mostly because the search doesn't like 3 letter words.

Can anyone point me towards good information on swapping this engine? Or suggest the right search keywords?

Thanks

Two good sources of information include www.ls1tech.com and www.ls1truck.com

I'd post a bit of a writeup, but I am at school, and only have 5 minutes left on the computer, lol

Oh, also post in our injection section, I am sure there are at least one or two guys there who can help you out. I also have a couple of connector pinouts etc I can upload to my server for you to download once I get home this evening.

Thanks for the links. I have a full engine/tranny out of a 2000 Tahoe that was damaged during shipment. It has 10 miles on it. It came with the full harness, computer and all the accessories. I just have to figure out the t-case (it has none and my stock 208 isn't a direct bolt up since the spline count is different) fuel system and maybe fabricate some mounts.

I will be putting a 6.0 in my 84 this summer. I have the motor and all the parts now. Should be pretty straight forward, After reasearching quite a bit, I think I know about about everthing there is to know about the swap.

A 32 spline NP208 or pass side drop NP241 will bolt straight up to the 4l60e

Not mine. It has a 27 spline output shaft. I just counted it to be sure.

However, I have a second 4L60 that came to me disassembled with a bunch of hi-po parts so swapping the tail shaft to a 32 spline shaft wouldn't be too hard. If I had one.

Do you have to pass emissions testing? If so you should check with your local smog tech first to make sure it's a legal swap. Here in California you cannot install a smaller engine even though it may be a late model FI engine that would be less polluting than the old tired engine. Just a thought and something for you to check out BEFORE it's too late.

Cool! I thought everything of GM's was 32 spline these days...

I'm pretty sure you can get a 27 spline NP208 and NP241 as well, or just change the input shaft on your current t-case, I hear they are reasonably easy to switch out :)

Fortunately, Texas is less restrictive than The People's Republik of Kalifornia.

So long as you install newer engine into older vehicle, it will pass the visual inspection.

Not only that, my K20 has the camper special package, giving it an 8600 lb GVWR. And in 1986, that means no emissions equipment. The truck didn't even have cats from the factory.

All I have to do is just drive it to the inspection station, they check the lights, honk the horn I give them $25 or so and get a new sticker. They don't even pop the hood. And if they did need to pop the hood (if it was a 1/2 ton), they'd just plug in to the OBDII computer and check for codes. They don't even have to hook up a sniffer.

Nevertheless, since the engine was designed to use cats and I have everything from the factory intake through to the factory Y-pipe, I'll be installing all of that. I don't care about building huge power. I just want the reliability and driveability of the newer powertrain.

Yeah, I'm looking into that. But there are some things I may have to look out for with computer control and older t-cases since the VSS may come into play.

The 90 - 91 NP241 crewcabs, blazers or suburbans have the same VSS that the newer t-cases use, and you can use a the factory electronic speedometer from the same truck and have your PCM programmed to output the correct 4000 ppm signal it needs to work when you get it flashed to disable VATS etc

That's good to know.

Where's the best place to find one of those (besides the parts wanted section here)?
