I picked up some Front seat belts from a member here, they are off an 1989 K5. They are in good shape and everything seems to be working fine. But I had a question about LOCK UP.

Are the belts suppose to LOCK UP when pulled / yanked really quickly. I know my 2001 work van locks up very easily. I wasnt sure if older vehicles did this or not.

They will all lock up but it usually takes a good amount of forward momentum to have them lock up.

So me just using one hand and pulling as fast and hard as I can wont lock it up?

Maybe you guys could check your trucks for me. Just sit in the seat like normal and take one hand and yank on it, see if it locks up.

Probably not. I've tried before and once in a while i can get it to lock up like that but not often. I do know they work though, had to make a panic stop several times and they did LOCK UP like right now.

Well I just checked my 2001 Jeep CHerokee. It only has 41k and we bought it new, I couldnt get the belt to lock up, no matter how fast , quick or hard I yanked on the belt. I guess it takes more energy or what have you to engage them. So, im not going to worry about it.

It's a little pendulum thing swinging in there that actuates the locking portion, which is why on steep hills they do tend to lock up on you.

Sometimes you can make them lock up just by jerking on them, but it's probably because it jostles the mechanism.

Yep good info right there.

Makes sense. I did see the thingy you were talking about when I was looking inside the setup. So, I feel better now and not going to worry about it. The belts were in really good shape and I didnt see any problems or potential problems, I was just asking more of peace of mind.

I think there are two styles. One works off of momentum, as the truck changes direction or slows rapidly it swings a pengulim locking the belt. Another works off of centrifugal force of the belt being pulled off the reel swinging a lever out to lock the belt. (I can't spell today) I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe this is correct and I think your belts are fine.
