As long as I've had my '88 K5 the doors have always been tough to close. It's been smacked on the driver's side door in the past so I just attributed the hard closing to that and simply being old and saggy.

A few weeks ago I decided to finally take a look at it and I've discovered that those little spring loaded seatbelt pins that come through the pillar right above the door striker are bent and now instead of getting pushed into the mechanism when the doors close they get bent back between the door and the frame where they bind and cause the hard closing.

I've tried bending them back but at this point the plastic is too cracked and deformed to make any difference. The question is, can I just cut these flush with the door frame or will it prevent the seatbelts from locking up in case of a rollover?

You should be able to cut them off. They have nothing to do with the seat belt locking up but do have something to do with helping to retract the belt once the door is opened. The belts will still retract but sometimes you have to tug on the belt first for them to retract.

Sweet, thanks Scott. I had a feeling it just affected that retracting portion (duh...they are "retractors":o) but I wanted to make sure. Plus they don't even work now so it's not like I'm losing anything.

Time to :hack:
