Have any of you ever thought it necessary to add a brace off the sector shaft?
I'm ordering a few extension nuts for my "01" and was thinking if it would be worth adding to the k5 and dually. Just more reassurance to keep it tight? Thoughts?
(I have frame brace, weld on and assist)

I thought about doing that when I was welding and bracing my frame on my K5

My machinist used to have friends running Nissan x-Terra's. They have a steering box that looks an awful lot like a scout II Saginaw box -mounts to outside of frame rail, but the box itself is on top of rail, so the sector shaft is longer than a Chevy box... The braces he made had a bearing of some type that went between the pitman and the cast iron on the box. He said it was more to keep the box from premature wear and leaking, than to protect the frame/ vehicle.

I ended up not bothering with it on the k5, and just put the brace on the back side of the box to the crossmember.

Ya, by using a flange bearing like above it's more just for that reason of pre mature wear and to keep the box tight. I was curious if anyone really used them on the k series stuff

Whats going on there? The nut for the sector shaft is special made to be ran through a bearing?

I would think guys running big tires with no assist could benefit from it but with a properly setup hydro assist setup it GREATLY reduces the stress that the box sees by moving it down to the ram and tie-rod.

It doesnt seem like a bad idea. I would just imagine if you're stressing the steering box that much then you are at the point where you need assist anyway and that takes all the load off the box.
