Sector Shaft Seal

Removing the sector shaft is easy. Pull the pitman arm and remove the 4 bolts on top. The sector shaft pulls out through the top.

Don't know about the seal. There's a snap ring on the bottom that I'm sure is part of the removal. Beyond that I don't know. :dunno:

Does the adjustment nut in the middle of the top cover have to some off?

If so, how do you keep that in adjustment (and in turn, keep the steering box from binding)?

DO NOT remove the adjusting nut, once you pull the four cover bolts off the sector shaft it will pull out with the adjusting nut/cover as an assembly, no need to mess with it.

That's right, no need to touch the adjuster nut.

You also have to remove the pitman nut and pitman arm to get the sector shaft out. Be ready for about a quart of ATF to gush out of the steering gear when you remove the sector shaft.

You will have to bleed the PS system when you reinstall it. Put the frontend up on jackstands and keep cycling the steering lock to lock and keep adding ATF till it is full.

So I finally got around to attempting to replace the seal tonight and the sector shaft won't come out. I removed the pitman arm and took the 4 bolts off of the top cover and the whole assembly will move up ~1/8" and then stop. I hit the bottom of the sector shaft with a hammer and it didn't want to come out any more than that.

I just noticed this (old) post here in the Garage and it doesn't seem like I'm missing anything :dunno:

Should I just hit it harder? I gave it a few fairly decent taps, but I don't want to damage any of the internals of the box.

It could be because the steering isn't centered. The gear could be hitting the top of the housing. Try turn the steering wheel.

I think the steering was centered, but I'll try that tomorrow morning. Thanks :thumb:

Yeah it doesn't just come out with a simple tug. I had to keep turning the shaft the goes to the steering wheel. It took a little bit of work, but not an extreme amount. I may have even ended up lightly tapping it with a hammer. You just don't want to get carried away with a hammer.

Back to something Harley mentioned. The first time I pulled one was to ship over to southerspeed. I thought it was all drained. Well, when the shaft finally came free a whole bunch of fluid gushed out all over the bench. :doah:

Yep, the steering needs to be centered to get the sector shaft out.

And yeah, I bet 1/2 quart came out with the sector shaft.
