Well someone tried but failed at getting in my garage but did do some damage. Going tomorrow to get a new deadbolt with the 1 inch lock instead of the normal one most have on there door. What are other tricks to keep garage safe? No windows, always dead bolted, and have security for house and garage. New signs coming from alarm company to let people know. I am pretty pissed about it and know it random break ins as community watch and sheriff have told us there happening all around. I want my garage safe and stuff to stay in it. Any tips?

Visible cameras are a great deterrent. If you don't want to spend the money for one then get a 'dummy' camera that has a blinking LED on it. Also, is the door frame wood or metal? Wood frames are easily broken. Same goes with the door itself, get a steel one. And alarms are easily defeated by simply setting them off on purpose constantly. If you do that either the police/alarm company start ignoring it thinking it's malfunctioning or the homeowner turns it off. Then it's a free-for-all.

been seeing a lot of newer LED flood lights . . . . DAM they light up a area GOOD !!!

get them and install motion sensors . so when they try again they will be light up real good

I think the best form of protection is one of those dog barking speakers. No one in their right mind would go in amroom with two large dogs on defense. The speakers are some sort of motion detection thing. Worth looking into. I have two big dogs and I wouldnt mind having another!

camera

i got a cheaper camera from amazon, two in fact. they work well. get a descent dvr and you can record motion or constant.

Motion flood lights for sure. A friend of mine had them at his house for years. The neighborhood went through a period where they were being targeted randomly. Not a single person with motion lights was hit.

Just take some comfort in the fact that unless there's something really really really worth stealing in your garage that a person could know about you'll probably never get touched again. Random targeting, the thieves are looking for something easy to grab and take off.

The decaying heads of previous attemptees mounted on pikes in the front yard always works...

...or so I'm told.

Light, especially motion lights, and being aware of your surroundings are great. Also, controlling how they can access the entry points.

If they case out your place and decide it's hard to get in and you seem even slightly vigilant then they will probably move along.

Professionals, crazies, and druggies are another matter.

So true. That's why at my garage when ever I see someone unfamiliar putzing around I don't hesitate and approach them and immediately give them a firm "Can I help you with something?" With a tone of voice like they don't belong here.

9/10 times its a friend of someone else's there looking for something but you never know if you deter somebody, and that's better than them casing the place, seeing that the occupants are timid and coming back later to hit it.

When people see a place that's always dark with owners that never seem to pay attention it just invites the wrong sort to go look it over.

I spent a couple hours yesterday walking my property, picking up trash, knocking over dead branches in the trees, and generally doing some property maintenance...I got the weirdest looks from some of the locals.

I like motion detector lights, but the wind and stray cats and other critters are always setting mine off, giving "false alarms"...

I park a vehicle right in front of the garage door up close now,so if anyone did break in,they wouldn't have an easy time getting anything "large" out of it,like my riding mower, rolling toolbox etc...

I went thru a period when several crackheads would come through the neighborhood and would ransack cars left unlocked, looking for loose change, cell phones,GPS,etc, anything small and easily pawned...about 2-3 years ago..

I saw they had attempted to gain entry to my vehicles using a slim jim, they butchered up the weatherstripping around the door(s) on my van and pickup, same with my parents vehicles...no entry was gained though, and there wasn't anything in them worth taking,or in plain sight...

One morning I saw my van's grill had been smashed, chunks were ripped out,and it appeared someone was planning to cut the radiator core out of it,but evidently were scared off before they did...scrap metal thefts were rampant here when prices hit their peaks...

One night when I was in my garage a few years ago,I dozed off while watching TV,after I had "muted" the sound during a commercial...only the TV was on in the small room, the rest of the garage was dark, and you couldn't see the TV from the front door...

I awoke rather suddenly when I heard a noise near the front door--then I heard voices!..:eek1:..at first I thought it was just the building creaking,it often makes noises when it expands and contracts..but it cant talk!..and the TV was muted,so it wasn't that either...:eek1:

I grabbed a hatchet I keep near my seat to chop kindling up,then
I sneaked up to the walk in door, and grabbed a pitchfork I had near the door, and I opened the latch very slowly, and when I heard someone walking up to the door,I flung it open really fast, which activated the motion sensor floodlights on the house, and I yelled "What the F*** are you snooping around here for you mother***ers!"...I lunged at the one nearest to me with the pitchfork..there was 2 of them, far as I could tell, and I think I made the one nearest to me crap his pants!...

I think I was probably more scared than they were!--but whoever it was ran off as fast as they could, while yelling to each other--I didn't get a good look at either one of them..I was wishing I had a 12 gauge..

I went in the house and called the cops, when they showed up about 10 minutes later, they had 2 teen aged males in the back of the cruiser--cops said "we found these 2 walking up the street, and they ran off when we told them to stop--do they look familiar?"...

I said I wasn't sure, but I did recognize the green shirt one of them had on,the one closest to the door when I opened it..

"We found these on one of them"--the cop showed me a cell phone and a GPS and asked if either belonged to me,I said no,I dont have those things..they also found about ten bucks in loose change, and some credit cards...and a pot pipe, and some weed too...

I asked them why they were snooping around my yard, but they refused to answer..I suspect they were either looking for loot,or maybe were using my shed as a hiding place to get high...its not fully enclosed,it just has a gate across the door opening..

I told the cops if I ever see anyone else tresspassing, they'll be picking up bodies!..they didn't like that much, and told me "just call US and let US handle it"...

So far I haven't had any more incidents, but will not be surprised if I do,I have been having trouble with some young punks who are living across the street..I wont be surprised if they do some vandalism to retaliate because I got irritated enough at them to call the cops on them a few times in the past year...

The other day when I went to open my walk in door on the back of the house that is on the garage,I couldn't get it to unlock--the key spun 360 degrees, and the doorknob felt sloppy, like someone had pulled outward on it hard...its original to the house though,36+ years old,and not a very high quality lockset,so maybe the ice and extreme cold damaged it over the winter,or something...Or,it might have been someone tried to force it open...

I have metal mesh screwed over the windows on the garage door and overhead door, but it'd be a cinch to kick in the thin panels on the overhead door and get in...I keep a bunch of stuff piled in front of that door to prevent that..

I'm going to replace the doorknob on the walk in door,I would like to put deadbolts on all 3 doors on the house, but I was never much good at installing door locks and chiseling out the jambs for the striker plates...if I put the deadbolt where the doorknobs were,I wont have a handle to open or close the doors with,so I guess I'm just going to put back another one like what was there originally, just better quality...all the exterior doors on the house have seen better days,so I'd rather wait and replace the door and the locks at the same time in the future..

My theory is if anyone wants to get in bad enough--they'll just kick in the door ,or use a cordless sawsall to cut the striker off, which I've been told is the most common way to get in a house around here lately..(probably a stolen sawsall,no doubt!)..make it too hard to break in,and they will just do more damage...there ain't much in my house worth more than 50 bucks anyway...thieves would be wasting their time trying to rob my house...but that doesn't mean they wont try...:(

well garage open has been broken for years now So going to replace that Tomorrow on my day off. Then after that making side door that has the dead bolt will no longer be able to be open from outside after a nice little heavy duty trick without opening main big garage door. Got new alarm signs coming and think getting a speaker like house has also for garage. Then following pay check sensors to let me know if you come in my driveway, motion lights then save up for a camera. Am I on the right track here guys?

Yep, i bought a 30 camera off amazon and very pleases it gives great pic day and knight
If you want let me know and ill send you a link

Sure Kain post up a link for not just me but other members here. Any one recomm a motion detection siren that is #^&* LOUD?

A friend of mine had his garage broken into about 2 years ago--he decided to put an unused baby monitor he had in the garage, and left it on at night, with the speaker next to his bed..
About a week later,he heard noises and voices on the speaker,he looked outside and saw 2 guys lurking around the door with flashlights..

He called the cops and they were able to corner them, and take them into custody...unfortunately no entry had been gained, and the "thieves" had no burglary tools on them,or any other "evidence",so they ended up being bailed out right away...but he has not had any one snooping around ever since then..

When my '72 K5 got it's doors stolen off it,after I got it back together,I used to leave the CB radio in it on at night, with a rubber band wrapped around the mike button,on a channel no one used ,and I had a walkie-talkie in my apartment left on "squelch" on the same channel...it saved me from losing the 4 new tires I put on it one night, when I was forced to park it in another lot I couldn't see it from at the apartment complex, and I heard someone open the door and talking, then I heard a lug wrench drop on the asphalt..

I called the cops ,and then snuck over to the other parking lot--where I saw 3 guys in the process of removing the lug nuts..they had put cinder blocks under the axles, and ripped out the valve stems, rather than jack it up..
It sure was nice watching them get caught red handed, and "cuffed and stuffed"...however,they were in the USA illegally, and fled before they were brought to court after being bailed out.....they likely would have gotten off anyway, since they hadn't gotten any of my tires off yet,by the time the cops arrived..

How about one of those "surviving intruders will be shot again" signs?

Or a shotgun taped to a chair with a string to the trigger from the doorknob. Just spitballing here. :D

To expand on the motion detector lights, put one or more inside the garage so it come on as soon as the door opens. Have the light so it shines right in somebody's face. Also walk around the garage and try to figure out where somebody would come from if they were sneaking up to the garage.....they are probably not going to walk up the driveway. Put motion detector lights on the back and/or side of the garage so they come on when somebody tries to sneak up.

For the doors, the man door or window are the most likely entry point for a thief. It's not very convenient and kinda' defeats the purpose of having it, but if you make the man door inaccessible they are probably not going to roll up the drive in door as it's very obvious.

At the Cabin my parents installed a couple of the motion lights that follow you, they still startle me at night occasionally :doah:

Another cheap deterrent are some alarm signs and stickers for the windows.

i know this doesn't answer the question directly, but i've had pretty good luck so far---knock on wood.

Location and neighborhood have a lot to do with it.....
