I am very unhappy with the th350 after my last trip. I have a t400 2 wheel drive in the garage that has a tci master rebuild kit in it.
I am thinking of getting the link kit below and swapping it out.
It says you have to disassemble and machine the case of the np205 for a larger bearing.
Is this the time to rebuild it? is it that difficult? I cant afford a 4l80e or i would buy one.
Is it worth it to swap it over?
I have a naibor who is a machinist, so i will talk to him tonight and see if he can machine the case or i have to find one to do it.

you have a TH350 trans that you are not happy with? i read that and thought you were talking about the engine at first. whats the issue??

i have never heard of the kit in your link, but thats interesting.

Yes, I would rebuild the 205 if you take it apart for machine work on the housing.
I don't feel that it's a difficult process, myself. Just have to pay attention.

I would ask what you feel there is to gain from the swap besides a stronger transmission. Are you towing with this?
The ratios are close to the same between the TH400 and TH350. So there is a lot of work to do, and driveshaft work, and the driving experience won't change much IMO.
Now if the TH350 is having problems, I can understand.

just had it rebuilt (1800 dollars later)and changed the filter after my trip and it looks like a bass boat paint job with heavy brass flake
Talked to the builder and he said "does it shift" yes it does " wont hurt it" and i call bull shit
the 400 does not need rebuilt

yep tore up some of the hard parts, planets new torque converter new sprag on of the shafts was cracked
and rebestose red clutches looked at receipt was 1600
when he pulled apart i was there and it looked like someone dumped a gallon of metal shavings in it

How many miles on this trans ? Do you have a picture of the trans pan with the debris ? I would expect some bit of shinny during/after breaking in new rebuild.
The TH400 will use more horse power to function than a th350. I understand the feeling of being fed up with auto trans, 700r4 owner, but if your th350 is functioning and not getting hot then the switch to th400 might be unnecessary

Let me see if I can find the vid I took, think it’s 10,009 miles on it t or more

this was after the last time i drove it over a year ago and now it has over 10,000 miles
and it was worse than this

There are some pretty good hills to pull out west. If it was slipping, it should have cooked the oil somewhat. Smell it. Compare to fresh oil if you need. I compare like that if my brain questions my nose.
I would do more diagnostics before swapping to another 3 speed that required a bunch of money to install.

Does your th400 have the 4.5” stickout?
If so, looks like that kit would work. You have to completely disassembled the 205 to have it machined. So definitely the time to put a kit in it, if it hasn’t been done already. But like everyone else said the th400 will suck worse than the 350.

i ran both a th350 built right and a th400 with np205 behind both and stock to 38" tires . . . i will take the th350 over the 400 all day long . . . my current truck ( budget beater ) has th400 and few nice mods / tricks from @Greg Ducato and its better but still not my old th350 i had years ago .

feel more power . better shift points . more power to the ground .

yes if going from 10 or 27 spline = bore from 80mm to 90mm in the bare 205 case . if i recall spec correctly . ( i need to do this to the 9 extra cases i have and sell them )

i did a HUGE step by step 203 range box and full 205 rebuild / mod in the advanced articals section here so look there . there stupid easy to play with if you do 2 or 3 little things the rest is a cake walk in the park .

-----------------------------------------

my last th350 was a local guy . transtar master reman kit / case saver / noyoyo shift improver kit / allison at545 convertor / top off with stock pan and reg old gm dex 3 . she was a ANIMAL until i sold the truck and was still going strong . he build so many this way for all the local mud guys for years and had ZERO problems . 1 guy brung him parts of a blown case and a clean used case and he cleaned up and new gaskets and seals and it was fixed .

your trans guy is a crack head fool . . . :deal:

hit up greg ducato on here . .... already linked him in .

the t 400 has a tci master rebuild kit in it was built to hold a mutch stronger engine than i have now.
my neighbor said he would do it and cost me a case of dos equis and i said deal
dont think its worth building a t350 for a 5 th time since owning the truck the t400 does not need anything but a front seal
the t case needs the adapter but even that is cheaper than a rebuild

What's the plan for the driveshafts and crossmember?

thats the call today with not only advanced adapters and off road design and ill let you know
