serpentine setup onto a 6.2

Normally I would just do this but where I live now it's hard to find any oddball parts.

Are there any pitfalls to this? Special length bolts. Different clocking etc.

Just wondering. Being prepared is bringing on a whole new importance.

I have both complete engines a 6.2 and a 6.5
 
Depends on the year of your donor. I don't remember the breaks, but some have the Alt and A/C compressor swapped. I think mine was off a '93 and my were swapped.

You will need a new water pump. I believe the ones off a 99/00 6.5L are best.

Your thermostat crossover will need to change with the HO water pump. There are different versions. I had a twin thermostat that did not fit (I wanted to run single anyhow). The single I ran interfered with my cruise control.
 
Not really related to your serpentine swap, but Big Blue is missing the way-too-long bolt that the alternator pivots on (runs through alternator and a sleeve on the bracket into the head). IIRC it's 8mm in size. Anybody know what the spec for this bolt is, or where I can find one?

My advice to Eric: Don't lose this bolt. It causes headaches when it's not present. :doah: :rolleyes:

I don't think he is asking how hard it is to swap, but how hard it is to find replacement parts? I would think the parts would be easier to find for the newer serpentine belt setup.

In all reality I was wanting to know if I need any weird bolts. Oddball bolts are very hard to come by around here so you gotta order em.

Was gonna do it this weekend but haven't been feeling to awesome.

I did the conversion.

If you have both complete engines with accessories, you're willing to bare the 6.5l and leave the crankcase open/exposed in the process, and steal all the fasteners, then you're set. The pump backing plate is needed along with the reverse flow pump, as it is different than the v-belt backing plate.

I decided to use all new accessories (as opposed used to donor ones), so I bought a new-take-off hi-flow water pump from Peninsular Diesel - for $8 more they included a backing plate with it.

Some of the bolts (and more importantly, the studs) are different between V-belt and serp - our local True Value has a phenomenal oddball/metric bolt selection, so I was able to get most of the bolts/nuts I needed there over the course of many trips. I did make one trip to Fastenal for the super-long bolts which go through the alternator and AC bracket. The tough parts were the metric shoulder studs, which I ordered from gmpartsdirect.com - the shipping was more than the parts.

I forgot about backing plate. I wish I went with all new accessories. I used the donor stuff. No problems yet, but why not. I had all bolts from the donor.
 
Thanks Keith. This 6.5 is getting disassembled anyway. I may use the block as a future rebuilder. Spreading the cost of a rebuild over a couple years isn't bad. It all depends on how I like the 6.5 when I get it in the crew cab.

I knew the water pump but didn't realize it needed the other plate too.

Yeah...it makes it a bit of a PITA.

You'll need some gaskets or Right Stuff, and thread sealant for the bolts that go into the water jacket. I threw a new timing set and front crank seal in since it was all apart anyway...you don't have to drop the oil pan (from a mechanical interference standpoint) but if you care about crap falling in there during the whole process you probably should. Then you could do a new oil pump and rear main seal also like I did!!! :doah:
 
I was planning on a new rear main and stuff. Gotta look at oil pumps never even thought about it but a good idea.
 
So I actually have a NA 6.5 with a serp setup I am going to put in my K30. It looks like it will work easy and other than metric bolts it is fine. On a side note I found a study that actually showed the high flow water pump (97+) actually worked better with the single thermostat housing making the flow more even from each cylinder head.
 
Yep I have everything off and just looking its gonna bolt up no problem. Waiting to get a new water pump and a gasket kit.

And for spring
 
I just swapped the IP from my 93 6.5 over the weekend (with great success). Next will be the heads and turbo, with the serp setup. The water pumps look the same but haven't torn into my 6.2 enough yet to know if it will work or not. I'll keep you posted if I beat you to the punch :D
