Yesterday I was driving my 1990 k5 on the highway. I had cruise on and suddenly the engine decelerated for a couple of seconds then resumed, then about a minute later it did the same thing. But this time the Service Engine Soon light came on. When I pulled into the nearest gas station, at idle and just above i noticed a rattle. I shut off the truck did my business came back fired it up and the light was out? But from then on in i have this rattle. TO me it sounds like it is coming from the bellhousing area or the back of the engine. I am totally perplexed on what it is and I don't want to break down either...Any help is much aprreciated....or ideas

If you go to the local parts store you can get an engine decoder and it will tell you what's wrong. It stores a code and you have to use that thing to get the code. I don't thinks it's too expensive but the cost is worth not having to troubleshoot if you don't know a whole lot about it. What kind of tranny do you have? Can you give a better discription of the rattle?

The tranny is a stock 700r4.... enough said. I have though in the past it was on its way out but, i could be wrong. The rattle to me is not consistent or have any pattern. just sounds like something is broken and rattling around... If the SES light goes out, with the computer still have the error message in memory

I am having the same prob with my light comin...but it only happens when i first start it up...after i start driving it shuts off and it never seems to run bad so i dont know what the deal it...but it bugs me to see it come on.

Those $30 "Code Readers" just short out 2 pins on the ALDL connector under the dash then then flash out a code via an LED on the box. You can do the same thing yourself, for free.

Short pins A and B together, then turn the key to "run" (Don't start the engine). Watch the check engine light as it flashes out the code. Flash, pause, flash flash is 12, the standard code you'll always get. Any other codes that have been set recently will be stored in the computer's memory and will also flash.

After the code 12, there will be a longer pause and then the other code(s) will flash. Flash, flash, flash, pause, flash would be a code 31. With those codes you can then determine which sensor the computer saw go outside of it's normal range of operation.

If there's an Autozone near you, they will give you a "key" that will short the 2 pins together and a small instruction book on how to use it and to decode some of the codes. A shop manual for your particular year/model will give complete info on deciphering the error codes.

The code readers also give you a book that has all of the codes in it. Even though the light doesn't come on, the code is still in there
