setting up cargo space for trails, what you guys got?

I'll echo the use of canvas bags instead of hard cases. I have a couple fab'ed aluminum boxes that hold all my tools and parts. The bags help take up as little space as possible. Yes, it will take longer to find a wrench in a bag than a molded case, but I don't care. :D I also have a 5 gal bucket with some oils/fluids in it with a sealed top.

Right on, thanks for all the replies, much appreciated. Anybody got anymore pics of how they have things situated? Just trying to figure out where and how I'm going to store everything so it doesn't jump to much on the trail. I do wish I had the luxury of a hauler but unfortunately if I wanna wheel I gotta drive the k5 there and back... Anybody not running a back seat?

axle shafts are duct taped together and secured between the boxes and seat
With the seat removed, I can put my spare 37" tire in and leave the bumper tire carrier at home. (which I'm doing for Rubicon trip, no bench needed) Backpack on left is first aid and my tow ropes are on the floor.

I have no back seat in mine. Just me and the wife so no need for back seat. What i did was grabbed an extra load lock from work, and went from wheel well to wheel well. Grabbed some heavy duty totes and keep them against the load lock. I have not put eye bolts in yet to ratchet strap them down, but i'm going to.
You can get a bunch of gear/tools in those totes. I will post up some photos when i get a chance.

That's a good idea too!! Never thought about a load bar!

Here is what I use ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^.

I carry 2 of them. One is complete "fluid" replacement (oil, filter, trans oil, gear oil, power steering oil, brake fluid) and belts and hoses , hose clamps and various lengths and sizes of fuel line and vacuum line.

The 2nd box is my "recovery" box, it has my Viair compressor, peice of 2x4, HD gloves, snatch strap, tow strap, jumper cables and various other things, including a short shovel, bolt cutters and pry bar and HD hammer.

I also carry a "Survival" backpack, its setup for 3 days (food , water, shelter, fire starter, first aid, etc)

I also carry 2.5 gal of water inside the truck and (2) 5 gal gas cans on the outside, spare is checked as well.

If im going on a big adventure, ill carry a box that has my "electrical" stuff in it, so I could repair any electrical issues, it has fuses, bulbs, wire, connectors and nuts/bolts.

I carry a hi-lift jack and a long shovel. I also keep an extra change of clothes (usually a jump suit), long rubber boots, extra shoes/boots for hiking, and a thick moving pad/blanket. A couple tarps, complete tool kit, two adjustable camping poles (use for a make shift tarp shelter).

I think thats it, lol.

Load bars are good, but I put down 4 D rings inside the truck. If my rear seat is up, I can access all 4, if the rear seat is down, I can use the back two. very handy.

lol..i like hard case for many reasons, make shift seating when box is out of truck, can stand on it , wont get wet if put on ground, easier to organize and find stuff. :)

I use these same totes for some extra parts and my camping gear.

^^^^^^^^^Yeah they are great, i have a stack of extras at home. Use them in the garage too!

:waytogo:

The camping stuff is kept in these year round, you can see the blue and grey ones up on this shelf I built.

Very nice guys!! Definetly appreciate it!

Well here's what I ended up with, stuck the back seat back in, figured there may be more then two of us who go.. And got back a tool box I gave a buddy a few years ago. Needs a new latch and lift cylinders, but I think it'll work for what I wanna do and it secures my stuff with the top off. I plan on adding camper style dome lights with switches built in to allow me to see in there at night. Here goes nothing!!! Thanks again for all your responses and ideas guys!

These giant canvas duffles are pretty awesome:

Only problem is that I can easily pack more junk into them than I care to lift. I have two of these loaded with emergency tools and stuff and I swap them between vehicles.

For the K5 I'm still trying to dream up a way to mount the spare and hi-lift in back without having to drill new holes. I wonder if I could make something out of tubing that mounts to the bed rails and has a few sections running across the bed for mounting the tire, jack, toolboxes, etc.

Thanks! Its held down by 4 3/8s self tappers, would like to bolt later though. Those bags do look handy, and definetly a good size!!
