I think this is just about right. It could be a little deeper but then backlash would be way to low. This was my fifth attempt after changing shims for backlash, pinion depth, backlash again, preload due to pinon depth change, etc, etc, etc.

This is at .006 backlash. I will post my process numbers when I am finished.

Opinions on wear pattern?

i love this pic it works great. got it from pirate4x4 tech writeup on gear setup.

looks little high to me. and dana's can be fussy to setup.

and was this new/used gears. if used should have checked bofore pulled to get same pattern/b/s reset. used stuff reads diffrent than new.

and i am no expert on setup so take my info for opinion only. not truth.

Yeah, that is what I was affraid of. I have seen those pics before but all I had was some black and white ones that were....okay.

These are a little more absolute. I like them too. Dang, more inner pinion shim. Uggg. LOL. But this is why you feel proud once you get it done and correct. Tomorrow, off to go through the motions again. Oh, that will also mean reducing preload shims. JOY!

Your first axle is always the most challenging, good luck.

Any chance you've read the setup tech on PBB? It really breaks down the different steps. Also, if the gears are used pay more attention to the coast side.

Do you have a bearing puller or are you using the old bearings with the center ground out for setup?
