trying to get the k5 revived again for some snow wheeling... wouldnt be complete experience without some late night last minute repairs??

I'm fairly certain this 9.5 SF14 bolt (six lug) that I installed years ago came from a 1997 Z71 pick up.

as of last night it is filling the passenger side drum and slinging gear oil. trying to decide if I want to try and repair that tonight/tomorrow, or just abandon the idea of having the k5 in action this weekend?

Cant remember where/how the seals and wheel bearings are orientated on that axle. Anybody have some input?

im fairly certain i will have to drain the diff, pull cover, pull C-clips, pull drums, pull axles... Strip the brakes and remove backing plates??? i assume the seals are on the ends of the housing and not inboard near the diff? bearings pressed into axle housing -or pressed onto the shafts ala Toyota sstyle???

1st think is to make sure your breather tube is clear. Then if your lucky brake clean the drum and backing plate new shoes your good. If not the seal, and diff oil too.

yes c clip the bearing is pressed into the tube seal can be pressed in and out with messing with bearing. Though if seal truly failed might be a loose bearing is the cause.

Yes, once the axle shaft is out of the way, you can get the seal out. I don't think you'll have to remove any brake parts other than the drum.

The contaminated shoes, of course :waytogo:

BTW last time I did this there were some issues with the parts listings in the store computers. You can probably find a post by me about the seal part numbers. For some reason there are a few different seals that are sold, with different dimensions, and they aren't right. No clue why, I believe all the axle seals were the same.

will search a little. if cannot find, i will buy ALL and try to remember to return anything unused

hmmmm- just occurred to me that if I had not overfilled the diff with oil... might not have it pumping out of my seal???

before the last big trip, I stuck my finger in the fill hole by the pinion... kept filling until I could feel oil. BUT, by pinion is pointed up at the transferase. At the time I was in a hurry and thought, "what's the worst that can happen... leaks out of the breather?"

I bet the axle tubes are 3/4 full of oil right now, and those wheel bearings have been getting hella lubed over the last 3 thousand miles?
