if you cannot fill in the blanks , can't see the forest for the damn trees!:yikes: :screwy:

"finishing touches", doesn't equate to "not nearly done". don't go insulting members because they give you an honest opinion. My first thoughat at looking at that? scary. And I'm not a "just got a welder" type. Learn to take advice as what it is, constructive, not criticising.

lack of penetration is only a small bit of whats wrong with that picture. Welding codes are written for both static (immobile) and dynamic structures. there isn't a more dynamic structure in the world, i can think of, than a spring hanger. joint design is also awful. fillet welds are very strong along a line parallel to the weld, NOT along a line that is perpendicular to the weld. weld metal strength (yield and ultimate tensile strength in p.s.i.) also must be matched with the strength of the base metal. finally, when steel turns orange its strength is determined by the rate it cools (freezes). the direction of the heat affected zone in a connection must be considered by the designer of a welded part.
i doubt that hanger would support the weight of the truck before the oscilations of suspension loads are added in. i'm researching my own 4" lift shackle flip for my '72 and i think i'm gonna contact ORD thanks to info posted here on this site.

You got my "half done and looks dangerous" opinion, when you finish Maybe you might get a " turned out better than I thought " opinion.

Relax, where all here to have fun and learn a little!

If it wasnt done, and still needed work why did you paint it

And I probably would have taken shackles off before I welded them on. Doesnt look like you did that. With your unexperienced welds I wouldnt be doing any work directly on a frame of a vehicle.

You said "and still have to do the finishing touches!". Hell dude, you aren't even half done! I have owned my welder for about 5 years now and I don't really care about chicks and I can still identify a clusterfock in the making.

Maybe it's like the guy with the scary steering page says - so all the sh!t is easy to see? He says other stuff that could be applied to this situation we have here also...

here is the PM I got:

trucks in the parking-lot next to the shop, ain't goin' nowere till it's finished just thinkin' outside a box, not store bought, damn sure, ain't no bling-thing ,but it is "a not done thing" ,as it states next to the pic. (can't see the forest for the trees):grind: :weld: :eek1:

my reply:

what are you trying to say here? in your post all you say is that you have to do the finishing touches and that your no welder. from just a close up pic of a shackle bucket I dont know that its in a parking lot and is not being driven. theres nothing wrong with thinking out side the box, or store bought parts either. it does not say a thing about not being done next to the pic as you said. since you have painted the shackle bucket yellow anyone would assume that you were done with the fabrication on the flip. "finishing touches" could mean anything.

I did not say your truck WAS on the road either. I said it "MIGHT" end up on the road and if something does go wrong then you would be screwed. as I said in my post I did not mean to flame you, if you take it as such then thats your problem dude. I suggested to do it right and safe buy buying some after market stuff that you wont go wrong with. you do with that information as you wish. if you cant take a little ribbing or some good advice or some constructive criticism then you dont belong on this site.

I help out alot of guys on this site with advice all the time, I also get alot of help and info too, sometimes with a bit of ribbing along the way. it goes with the territory. dont have a chip on you shoulder for every time someone does not like what you post.

Id do it more like mine.

HMMM?don't like chicks,and owns a welder,is it A/C or D/C ??

I would highly recomend putting the ghetto down and stepping away. If you want a cheap shackle flip in the back, get a set of froont rear spring hangers off a 1/2 or 3/4 ton chevy of the same vintage. Use at least grade 5 bolts and really try no to screw it up.

i have the same brackets on mine the front ones and they seem to work awsome but you are a noobie so just get a feeler see what works best for you but no matter what think about how your safty is affected as well as others. I have been welding for like 2 years i am no pro . If I got a cage I would either go take a class to get better or have someone weld it that is better. it is my safety my gf's and anyone elses at risk as welll .

Hey charlietuna, I just want to say that you are trying, learning to weld, trying new things. I am not going to get into the debate with your pic, the important thing is you are trying, I have a brother that is a Pipe Fitter in Nuc. plants and another that is a Metal Tester, they always have something to say, used to p!ss me off so bad, as time went on they said less and less, now they tell me I seem to know what I am doing. Welding is a skill, takes tons of practice, I admire the fact you want to build the flip on your own, and not buy one, or have someone weld your own design, a photo of a weld means nothing, I have seen some awful looking welds that tested very strong, and some awesome looking welds that feel apart. As I said I will not comment on yours. No one likes being told that their weld is a POS, or they should have a Pro do it, or walk away. There is some good advice here, and some uncalled for here IMHO.

A little tact when it comes to advice etc. would not hurt anyone, give a paying member a bit of respect, maybe all you welders can think back to the first welds they made and how proud it made you feel to have done it.

I am done ranting, so flame away on me if you see fit:D .

Well, let's see...

You post a POS, get called on it, and get pissy about it - that always goes down very well around here. As a public service, could you please post where you live so that the rest of us can get out of the way...
:haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: ,You are the man, look forward to wheeling with you again.

I love chicks, and I already have the only one I want, so I don't have to be "into" them anymore. A/C welder.

I need to get back to the lounge now... there's WAY too much drama in the garage for me...

:haha: :haha: :haha::haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha:

charlietuna, as you can very well tell, when it comes to mods that effect the structural integrity of the rig, be it for the occupants, or the general public, CK5 is pretty quick to call you on it. what you've got going doesnt look like a safe start.

you want to avoid "store bought" parts? here's your solution. a front hanger off of a truck similar to yours. ironically, it looks exactly like what you're trying to accomplish, and will bolt directly onto your truck. this particular piece was actually on ProJunkRacing's truck for a while when it belonged to me. best of all, they're dirt cheap!
