shackle flip vs new springs?

unless u put in 64 inch springs in the rear then you got to cut off all the hangers but well worth the extra labor

And then you get to deal with more axle wrap :deal:

For the record, I think a shackle flip is better than new springs (I ran lift springs on my truck before I linked it).

ive had this same debate on another thread and all im sayn is if stephen at ord who sells a shackle flip and custom springs from the same place tells me that custom springs are better then im going to listen to him. never owned a shackle flip rig or installed one so maybe everyone else is right and stephen is wrong but im gunna take the guy whos doin it for a livings advice.

Front hanger homemade shackle flip with stock 3/4 ton 56s ran backwards, 7" shackles and in boarded shocks, for the win...:woot:

Crazy flexy...

all being said, i think i'm going with the flip. i'll call ord next week and see what the options are, thanks for all the help with this

just my two cents but i had stephen at ord make me some custom springs and they are pretty sweet great ride and tons of flex. There was plenty of debate of me not going with a shackle flip but im happy i didnt here was the old post i had theres some descent info on there from stephen. http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=262768

Kkaos,
What length were the rear springs from the ORD set? And how smooth is the ride? Have you had a chance to ride in an shackle flip vehicle just for comparison. I'm getting to age 50 and thinking a nice riding Suburban would be nice. I've always had the usual Tuff country or Rancho suspensions but time to spoil myself on my last build with a smooth (but offroadable) ride.
Anyways, as smooth ride as I can get with a Suburban w/BBC, 1 tons/39.5 TSL's.

The rears were 64 inch springs if i remember correctly they measured just over 62 inches eye to eye and a couple inches of stretching to get them in place. As far as ride i love it but i can only compare it to a tuff country ezride 6 inch that only stayed on my blazer long enough for stephen @ ord to ship me springs. i suggest you call stephen at ord he will do you right on whatever you want be it a shackle flip, custom springs or a coil over setup he's pretty knowledgeable.

Why not take your ass out to pick-n-pull, get some 56s to replace those bent ones, and get a pair of 9" shackles, or 7"shackles +a zero rate. May as well get those longer springs while doing the shackle flip, especially scince your stockers are already bent.

I've actually been thinking about this a lot lately. I'm going with a 5" or 6" shackle and a set of 56"s for the rear. If my current springs are bent I'll just grab another set of stock rears on the cheap and make some longer shackles to put the 52"s up front with an add-a-leaf or a couple extra leaves to level it out.

I'd like to end up with about 6" of lift, a winch, and welded spiders in the 12 bolt. Then I'll run it for a year or three on these 35's until they're bald and probably start all over with 38"s or 40"s, 7" of soft lift, and crossover on 1-tons in mind.

Good call on the shackle flip instead of springs by the way

My buddy installed 6" lift springs on his K5 last year and I absolutely hate it. It feels more like a racecar than an off-road vehicle.

Its the main reason I wont just do the same real quick and won't put more than a 2" spring on my truck.

I've been told, my truck rides like a Caddy on Swampers...:D

Flip and 56s and 52s up front, you wont be disappointed...

flex pics? :) hehehohoho o yeah :p

I know its been a while but heres the only crappy flex pic i could find. BTW swaybar is still connected as well. Ill have to go get some better pics cauz i have no idea where the old ones are.

Rattlesnake Mtn? I miss that place!

oh yeah and their building a big ass water tank on rattlesnake the got all the little trails chewed up and im sure there gunna build a huge ass fence around it.

i've read a lot about the shackle flip on here, but other than the $$ saved is there an advantage compared to just installing new 4" springs?

yeah, you don't have 4-5 inches of shackle hanging down below everything, i personally don't care for the concept, i understand it, and it works, but after seeing them installed compared to a factory style, i prefer the factory, keeps things tucked up and out of the way.

And in my opinion the tire can only go so far up into the fender without more lift or modifacation so why not take advantage of the droop you can get from the factory setup. I know my rear shackels will lay flat from straight up and down and their 6 inches tall so i figure thats at least an extra 4 inches of axle drop beyond what the springs are capable of.

Most of the other type of rigs on the trail already have the shackle hanging down and it works...

I guarantee you're not getting as much droop from the factory that you'll get with a flip... Also by doing the flip you lift it at the same time, so that gives you room to stuff the tire...

Then again, it comes down to personal preference... Meaning, some people want their rig to perform and others leave it stock...

I just like having my tires planted on the ground for traction I guess...:dunno:

I bang my shackles on stuff all the time...Meh thats why I had Kert build them. Just chips the paint
