Hey guys! I have an 88 k5 with tbi and 700r4 and I seem to be having a shaking issue with it it seems to happen under acceleration at higher speeds. Now I've had the u joints replaced and there is no play there and the pinion bearing is fine it seems to be coming from the rear driveshaft could the slipyoke cause this?

is there any slop in the slip yoke?
some slip yokes only go back on the driveshaft one way, some dont, if there isnt a larger spline on the shaft it could be that the yoke was installed with the ujoint out of phase.
so could be ujoint out of phase or your driveshaft needs to be rebalanced

I guess it could be out of phase the Po installed the ujoints originally and he was kind of an idiot then I had new ones installed but maybe they never put it into phase at the shop

off hand i think the ujoints should both be facing the same directions

Shaking

What kind of shaking are you talking about? Describe it a little. I can think of several things in that year that could be causing it.

well it just seems like its in the drivetrain, towards the back of the truck and its a constant shaking, but it gets worse when she hits 4th gear

no, ive had them rebalanced and everything, its something in the drivetrain, and it seems like there is some play in the drivetrain, i'm just not sure where, theres some play in the shaft

Other little things to check...motor mounts, trans mounts, u bolts for the rear axle...jack up the rear end and start pushin and shakin on things

problem is, that doesnt explain the slop in the driveshaft though, which im pretty sure is where the shaking is coming from

Just trying to through out ideas.

Did you check the yoke end of the drive line? The little tabs that keep the u joint in place can get wallered out and a new u joint won't fix it. It will cause play and vibration for sure

ok well thanks for the ideas anyways, um you know that one makes sense to me, next time I go home I'll have to check, I'm up in fargo right now and the truck's in minnesota lol, gotta make some money to drop into this truck, so far I like it, I'm putting a set of vortec heads on next and retuning, but I wanna get the drivetrain issues worked out first

Drive train shaking

Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner as I was out of town at the speacilist I had to see. Okay my head isn't really clear right now so lets see if I can get this down. First climb under the Blazer (in park) and grab the driveshaft and try twisting it from side to side (like it were spinning) and see what play you get. Next try pushing up on it and pulling down on it and see what you get. Listen for slight popping or metal ping at the U-joint areas. This should help you in knowing if it is the U-joints or not. If you don't suspect the U-joints then it's time to drop the drive shaft and check the transfer case and the rear axle. With the Blazer in park and blocks against the tires (please block it as if you got hurt I would feel horrible! Not saying your simple or anything just told a guy once and he over looked the blocks and as soon as he popped the driveshaft loose the truck ran over his, told me he was a mechanic, legs and he was pissed at me. ????) So anyway after the shaft is down check to see how much play you have in your transfer case (if it's 4x4 that is, didn't remember if it was or not, sorry). Try turning it both directions and see how much play you have. Just slide the driveshaft back onto the transfer case if it is the slip yoke type and rest the shaft on your legs. If it's not too bad then it's time to check the rear axle. Grab the output yoke and try spinning it in either direction and see if you get any play. Push up and down on it also and check for play. If you get play in any of the two areas let me know and I'll walk you through what to do. Just don't have the energy or mental power to type out the whole process so explaining one is better than all. If you don't find play it is time to check the U-joints while the shaft is out of the Blazer. Same test as above only pull the caps that are free and check the condition of the bearings as if any of the bearings are bad on the joint it will affect all of them. Just be careful when you pull the caps as there are numerous needle bearings that may try to fall out. If the joint has been greased and isn't ruined they will stay in if you are careful. Also check to see if the bolts on the cap clamps are tightened evenly as I have replaced alot of U-joints and some driveshafts due to one side being tightened more than the other! If there was any dirt or junk in the seat or some after market joints are slightly larger, the joint will go in uneven and not be noticed unless you really look for it. Some out there will say no way but I have been doing this for a long time and have seen just about everything these old beauties can throw at you. Also check your U-bolts and see if there is any wear on the inside of them. If there is, something is definitely wrong. It could be your front end too as I have seen this alot on the 81 up Blazers and it can feel like it's coming from the rear drivetrain. One more thing. When you brake is it grabbing more on one side than the other? Try all of this and then holler back at me and I'll gladly give you some more of my two cents worth. But as always this is just my opinion and take it as you will. Hope this helps and that all works out well for you and best to you and yours!

You bet

No problem. I remember what it was like to start out working on these and no one wanted to take the time to teach me so I had to learn everything the hard way. I started working in a paint and body shop when I was 12 and can remember what buttholes those older guys were when I would ask for some help or was stuck on something. They would set there and laugh at me with their arms crossed shaking their heads. Then and there I swore I would never be that way and help anyone who needed it. So very willing to help where I can. The thing about anything related to building and fixing old cars is you are always learning something new. So if we all spread the knowledge around more, there will be more quality Blazers and older vehicles on the road which I love to see! When I see a really nice older Blazer parked next to a new one there is no comparison! These old girls are true beautys! Even when they're a little rough they still look like a man's vehicle and not a soccer mom's run around SUV. Best to you and hope you get her back on the road soon. Hey, and send me some pics of her so I can see her. I like seeing Blazer pics like other people like seeing picks of other people's kids.:D

Will do that for sure as soon as I get a few more! lol I just love these old trucks and me wanting one all started with that top gear episode in death valley. I thought that old k5 was the coolest thing! At the time I had a 78 dodge power wagon which was my baby but was not practical for a college student at all so I listed it on craigslist about a week before that episode came out. Funny coincidence is the fact that I only put on that I would consider trades but I didnt say for what. Out of nowhere some kid texts me a picture of a k5 and I suddenly fell in love lol, I went and looked at the truck, and knew it's what I wanted. So now shes sitting in my driveway waiting for a set of vortec heads as the PO burnt a valve trying to take it mudding when it wasnt set up for it, so it's getting new heads, a new rear leaf and a lift with plenty of body work as well, I've already painted the rally rims as you can see in my sig pic but now I'm waiting on some center caps and beauty rings when I get the money. I'm starting a new job next week at the local auto parts store where I can get better discounts and pay than what I'm making at Autozone lol. Thanks Again 78! Your help means the world to me!
