shave or locker?

i would go to a bigger size but i am still running a 10 bolt front and i have 2 sets of 35's one set of mastercraft courser m/t's and a set of 5 16/35/15 boggers so untill both of those are wore out i doubt i go bigger and also i don't know how well my front 10 bolt will like anything bigger than a 35

i like the idea of a grizzly locker they are a little cheaper but i have never run a locker only limited slip or open and both of them are useless how much wheel spin is needed for locker to lock up and does it stay locked good never used one so i don't know what to expect i have wheeled a friends offroad only truck what was welded and i loved it

if i shave it myself how far should i go? just below bottom bolt hole or make it a 13 bolt? i don't wanna deal with any leaks

I'd keep all 14 holes, but go up as far as you can and leave the bottom bolt alone. Especially with the stock cover.

Unless you cut and plate the bottom of the diff you will lose some ground clearance. Cutting the bottom lip off helps a ton but no matter what you'll lose 1/2"-1". Doesn't seem like much, but for you maybe it is.

For most people, it's easy to gain that clearance and more by going to a bigger tire due to the much stronger axle. For you it sounds like new tires aren't in the works for a while, and switching to the 14 bolt may be a good solution to not put money into a diff you're going to replace.

In my opinion, there really isn't any more effective upgrade than a locker and that's what I would do.

A mechanical locker (like a Detroit, Grizzly, etc) absolutely will stay locked when you are on the throttle and they don't really take any wheel spin to lock up. When you are off the throttle they will spin freely and let the two tires spin at different speeds (usually). If you take a slow turn with your foot off the gas (or clutch in for a manual) it will free spool, if you hit the gas while turning it will lock back up and chirp the tires. That's how they work, they are absolutely night and day difference in traction compared to a limited slip.

thanks for all the info i am going to start shopping for a locker and grind all i can without affecting the bolt holes and i think i will make a ring and beef up my stock cover i found 2 lockers one is a used detroit from a cucv i believe for 250 and one is a new grizzly that he said was never used went different direction for 300 what do you think? or should i just buy a new one
