Shhhhhh - need quiet muffler

Okay, well after reading through 3 pages of posts after searching the word "muffler" I never really found what I was looking for.

My '83 K5 w/ the 6.2L is way too loud for my taste. Currently it has the stock dual set up and I'm sure the mufflers are shot or they have holes or ???

I'm interested in finding mufflers that are nice and quiet :)

I did gather that the Flowmaster 70 series is nice and from the sounds on their website I think it will work fine. It's just the prices I've seen online seem a bit steep for me.

What I'd like to do is take it in to a shop and get any pipes replaced that need it PLUS get a custom "H" pipe welded in... but the choice of muffler has me still scratching my head :dunno:

Anyone have any recommendations for a lower cost and generally quiet muffler?

Oh, and to thank you for your help here is a nice joke for you:

"Last night I dreamt I was a muffler.... I woke up exhausted" :haha:

Alright, thanks for any help you can provide!

I've been looking into this for a different vehicle and can say it's confusing.

If you want to buy a Flowmaster than forget about the word cheap. They aren't bad products but the name is at least $40 of the price tag when compared to what else is out there.
For the record their 60 series is supposed to be the quietest of their conventional mufflers from what I heard. They also have a new line called Hushpower. Not sure on the details of those.

While you're doing this you might consider replacing your dual system with a single system. A single 3" exhaust will flow better than a dual 2.25" like we have now.

Yeah, seems like a lot of folks like the single 3" system. Plus, replacing one muffler at a time would make economic sense after taking the plunge and replacing the entire system.

I've heard of the Hushpower... need to check out their website.

Well, I think I'm going to run it by a discount muffler shop just to see what type of quote I get... my muffler cans are split open right now and they're pretty loud. I'm not sure how much longer I can drive this way before getting pulled over :)

Thanks for your reply!!!

No problem.

Dunno how much you know about exhaust but ask about a mandrel bent system. That means the bends are a constant diameter and not crinkled. Helps improve flow a lot.

Only problem is it's uncommon in some areas and expensive in others. When I lived in SoCal it was no big deal and every shop did it but up here no one knows about it or they claim it isn't any big deal...morons...

UPDATE: Ended up going with a shop nearby my place - Afton Muffler (motto: no muff too tough) in Afton, MO.

I needed new tail pipes also so I had them install OEM replacement mufflers and they custom (mandrel) bent tail pipes that turned out to to the side of the rig behind the rear spring hanger... that way I could do a flip in the future with out any interferrence.

They did great work and they did it in less than an hour. Good price too and most of all... my rig is super quiet now. Wifey likey... and that's worth every penny :)

I only hear the diesel engine now.

I'm going to swing by there sometime soon and see if they'd tackle a custom cross pipe for me... if not I might do that one myself.
