I was talking to a friend and he said instead of using Mixed gas in the MIG that I could use shielded wire. is that correct and what is the cost difference?

The cost of sheilded wire is amost 2.5 times that of regular unshielded. 10 vs. 27$ That alone has me turned off to using it.

Shielded wire slags up also, kind of like arc rod. Once you use gas after using shielded you won't go back. At least I won't.

If you already have gas the cost of the sheilded wire is going to cost more than the cost of a tank of gas.

That was what I was looking for. I Filled my tank today and the guy at the shop said that when building safety cages the welds of the shielded wire are not as solid. That was enough for me. It was only 22$ to fill my tank with mixed.

Now off to Industrial metal supply for some HREW.:D

Flux wire is nasty stuff. I'd rather just use a stick welder than flux in a MIG.

The ONLY place that flux is good is in a 110v machine where you can get the small machine into a cramped spot but not a bottle too.

I'd rather lenghten my hose from the regulator and leave the tank behind than switch back to sheilded. That is if its work being done at the shop.

What are you doing, literally welding two army tanks together?:eek1:

I was building some special crackshafts with 6" diameter journals out of 4140 and 3" thick lobes :eek1: :eek1: :eek1:
