Shift kit?

Almost all transmission rebuilders do "shift kit" like up grades to their transmissions.

for like 30-60 bucks they give a firmer shift and a fun aspect...im on a budget build so im trying to decide if i should or just leave it stock...(th400 by the way)

I have a shift kit in my c10 and after driving that all the time I can't stand autos that shift smooth. Worth it in my opinion.

I think I just read in Beast_88k5's thread that he did that to his 400. I'm not sure if he bought a kit or not. I think there may be a way to do it with out buying it. Might want to ask him.

I got one, mine I had to actually drill holes and remove 2 or 3 of the I believe 6 checkballs that control fluid movement. Its a very old school trick on them my dad taught me from his strip days. Mine really bangs into gear, but I enjoy it. Mine also holds any gear at any RPM, which is nice as well. Only downfall is before I put the ratchet shift in, I could drop it into 1st going 100mph if the truck would do it, and it would go straight to first. And then probably straight out the bottom of the truck shortly after.

Long story short, worth it.

Up to a point, shift kits improve the life of a transmission. All the time between the gears, the clutches and brake bands are slipping causing wear and generating heat
So the faster and firmer it shifts, the less slippage and less wear.

But, if you go overboard, and get the type kit that just lets it slam into gear, then you start straining parts of the tranny and other drivetrain stuff.

Don't get the "race kit", and you should be fine.

yea that is exactly what i dont want, premature wear, i think that that kit i linked would work well and not be overkill.

Yes that's the transgo kit I was saying. I put stage 2 in mine. Stage 3 is what my buddy put in. Best shifting tranny I've ever felt. Mines just pretty crisp shifts. His gets it.:waytogo:

Back when I ran an automagic, always had a mid level shift reprogram. Agree with Fordum, you can go overboard.

Transgo = good stuff :waytogo:

Like has been mentioned banging shifts and chirping tires at part throttle can be fun for a little bit but isn't good on stuff. Had a set up once were if I timed it right and laid into it right as it tried to make a part throttle shift it would roll the tires over a ways from a 20mph roll. Really got peoples attention :haha: but still not good on anything and no reason to have a trans knock ur teeth out at part throttle IMO
