Well since I don't see it I can only guess how the problem is but you could make a slight bend in that rod and readjust the linkage to get back to the right spot for shifting, and I am only talking about a slight bend like an arc to clear the headers.Well the long linkage bar from the column down to the tranny is rubbing on my headers, you really gotta pull hard to get it into OD, and i dont think i can pull it all the way down to 1st. What can I do?? Maybe take it off and shave an eighth inch off with a grinder???

Just take a ball peen hammer and hit your exhaust.....

Yeah you can have a bend in it, not much pressure there, but when you bend it it will get out of adjustment and you need to compensate, the end of that rod has a bolt, you losen i and slide it out to get it back where it should be.
