probably this is something I should know, but I don't...

4speed manual. Sometimes when I'm creeping along a bumpy road/speed bump/accidentally run over a pedestrian, the shifter just pops right out of 3rd gear. Always when I have my hand on it... and no, I don't ride the clutch. I never notice an engine rev because I barely have my foot on the gas at all when it happens- slow moving problem. Have never had it happen when moving faster... it's like a parking lot problem.

I'm sure I don't even want to hear about what is wrong.... :D

So am I reading this correct that you have your hand ont the shifter? If so does it push the stick in your hand or are you holding it in gear? Light loads on the gears makes it easy to bounce, or pull the trans to neutral. Old trucks do that the best as the detent springs are tired.

3rd gear pop out comon = worn tranny inside. real bad when thay pop out under load & by the sounds of it your not there yet.

live with it or reman it basicly.

super wicked awesome.. I was waiting for the hammer to fall, like.. any minute your transmission is gonna fall out..

Hand is on shifter, but just resting, not holding in gear.

Makes me wonder if the transmission is original.

and fyi wana kill a stick shift faster over its life time ? go ahead and rest your hand on the shifter all the time. just so you know its not a good thing to do .

my daddy taught me that lesson when I was learning to drive.. that and the "never downshift unless you think you may die.. cheaper to replace brakes than a transmission"...

I guess that's why my hand is on the shifter at that time- I'm going slow enough that I may actually plan on shifting... this actually makes a lot of sense.

and THANKS FOR THE LINK!!!!!:thumb:

It's second gear.....

That being said, it is a $4 part to fix it, but you have to disassemble the entire transmission to fix it. It won't hurt anything in the transmission to just let it happen, it is just really annoying. I am thinking about tearing one apart and fixing it. I could take pictures.

Oh, and if you are trying to take the top cover off, you have to shift it halfway into reverse.

Forget that lesson as well, you aren't going to damage an SM465 downshifting.

Martin

oops! Sorry, I was thinking what I call third, as in the stick is up toward the dash! I forgot how the knob is marked.

SM 465's had some issues with the snap ring holding 3rd gear in place breaking and it allowed it to pop out of gear...there was a quick fix someone invented that was made from a two peice shaft collar looking thing that had the inner bore machined so it had a lip that would go into the snap ring groove on the mainshaft, that could be installed thru the PTO covers,it had two allen head bolts to clamp it together....

J.C. Whitney had them in their catalog for a few years, then they dissapeared,I dont know if they didn't pan out or what....to replace the snap ring means taking the tranny out and all apart unfortunately....could be a synchro going out causing this too,so a total rehab of the tranny wouldn't be a bad idea while its out--it sucks bad enough pulling it out once...:doah:..or you can go with a used one and hope its not the same as yours was...

yeah, you've won me over with that... it's 2nd gear... a 4 spd, but L, 1, 2, 3..

but if anyone calls it a 3 spd with a granny gear, I'll punch ya in the mouth! :haha:

Mutt's has a bit of it... actually every 465 I've ever owned had it to some extent... I'll fix mine when I go thru the box next year...

and what's the point of a manual if ya ain't engine braking.... ;)

Oh I agree whole heartedly. I always call it a four speed, but top gear is 3.

Odd, the newer models are suppose to be updated from the factory. My 1982 K30 does it, but my 1987 V10 never does it, my 1988 V10 Suburban (tranny is from a a 1985 K10) never does it, and my 1990 K5 (tranny from a 1988 V10 Suburban I believe) never does it.

and what's the point of a manual if ya ain't engine braking.... ;)

Exactly.

yeah, Mutt has just a touch of it, it's only done it a couple times it seems... my old 77, all the time... ;)

My dad....lol.... I believe in engine braking, it's one reason I like to drive manuals exclusively... By my dad taught me to drive in a very fancy schmancy car.... I think he was worried I was going to mess it up driving like an idiot. He was probably right... I think he had a vision of shifting into 3rd in a 5 speed at 60 mph... Blah blah..

I really enjoyed that transmission rebuild link....

You should have seen my buddy driving his leased Mazda. He'd jam that sucker into second at 80 and drop the hammer for the smoke show. After 2 years that thing would kick out of 3rd so hard it would break your wrist. His dad worked his magic on it, and got it shifting fine enough to return it at the end of the lease. I guess they sold it and the trans grenaded after 2 weeks of the new owner having it.

I did some extensive reading on this problem, I'm not convinced the "fix" is any other than replacing the forks. There is probably a reason you can still get forks for these things.

If it were a quick swap I'd have my dad swap his, it will come out of 2nd every time if you don't hold it there. I don't really want to type it all out, it's already been written about extensively, the thought was that when the fork coating wears, the shift isn't actually being completed. Coupled with the slop in the shifter already, that makes sense to me.

There's a whole bunch more to it, no wear on certain parts that should be if it was a hard part issue, etc., but there are also a variety of hard parts made to "fix" this problem as well, the only way to know for sure what fixes it IMO is to swap in a different set of forks on a tranny that is kicking out of 2nd, and see if it fixes it.

I've been around several that were fixed by just installing the pipe and nothing else. You can still get the pipe from any decent transmission shop.

Martin

GM is actually the one who started making that piece. Well, whoever they bought them from, but GM figured out they worked for something obviously!

Interesting that the "pipe" fixed the problems. Whole tear down to get there I assume, but if it solves it, that's good. I mean mine has 30 years on it, realistically in 30 more years of infrequent driving, even back to stock it would last the rest of my life.

Unfortunately I believe my spare trans all have worn forks, so those will need replaced anyways.
