Well the body of the shock is a lot bigger than the shaft, so if the shock mounts are set up close to vertical the body will hit the axle tube. This is actually pretty likely with one of the stock mounts in the rear. At any rate, it should be set up so the shock body CAN be mounted up - in case you want to switch to reservoirs or 5150 shocks later.

Best possible solution.

You telling me how to fit shocks? These bilsteins are cake compared to some 2.5 piggybacks

:haha:

Last truck I put boots one was my 83, haven't cut them off yet. More or less just laziness.

I won't/haven't put a set of boots on now. My 97 is runnin all 4 shocks open, it sees salt a few times a year. Shafts still look beauty, they have been on it for 3-4 years now.

But yeah I'm in agreeance that they just trap stuff in.

I don't think there's much debate at all... plain shafts stay fine and boots just hold crud to fock em up...

THE only reason to run em IMO is if you like the look and it's strictly a street queen..

This. I knew someone would say it before I did.

I ran shock boots for a short time, I would take the bottom off and drain them occasionally and I would always gets stuff out of them. So I ended up just removing them permanently. For a while I did put rear shocks with the shaft up, so I wouldn't knick the shaft with a rock (the front I left down since it is ahead of the tires and its less insprung weight). However, when I switched over to the rezi shocks in the back I Installed them shaft down of course, no boots.

And Adam, piggyback shocks are a piece of cake compared to coilovers. :) :waytogo:

The pair I got from Glenn had the boots on, I was too lazy too take them off, even thought I don't like the look.
