Shock setup with 57\'s

For those of you with 57" rear springs, I'm getting ready to setup my rear shock and I would like to know how much springs travel you are getting with the 57's? I bought the Doetsch 8403 shocks (18.5" body and 13.5" travel) Thought about a 50/50 setup but I think more down travels would be best.
Any thoughts??

Bryan

Re: Shock setup with 57\'s

Are the shocks mounted upside down? The shaft looks like it's at the bottom /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Re: Shock setup with 57\'s

we were told by doetsch that it doesnt matter... you have contrary info....?

Re: Shock setup with 57\'s

Twin tube shocks should not be mounted upside down. Doetsch does make monotubes but the majority here are running their twin tube design and like any twin tube they will not function correctly inverted.

I've spoken with a shock rep and he agrees with me. I've been told any monotube can generally be mounted upside down but any twin tube shock reguardless of if it is hydraulic, foam, or gas charged should not be mounted upside down as it will not function correctly.

I think a lot of people have been mis-lead into thinking that a lot of shocks can be mounted upside down (Rancho RS 9000s are a prime example) and I really feel that the truth should be known about the design.

Having seen cutaways of a twin tube shock I am at a loss as to how it could do much of anything if it is upside down.

Re: Shock setup with 57\'s

its been a while since i've read up on shocks, but if my memory serves me correctly, if a twin tube shock is mounted upside down you will end up with air going through the valves, which will not allow the shock to cool properly. this overheats the shock and not only causes improper functioning, but decreased life span. i could be wrong, because it's only been 5 years since i went through Suspension Theories. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Not to mention the oil is going to be on the wrong side of the piston an unable to work its way back to the bottom where it belongs. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif
