Shop Building Q's

I am building a 30 x 40 garage in the next couple of months. I am figuring around 15000 also. I plan on using in slab radiant heat and the figure out some air flow for the summer. If you plan before the slab, you can do radiant heat for 2000 or so using a water heater and circulation pump.

The in slab heat is pretty cool stuff but I'm not really concerned with heating the shop, it just doesn't get cold enough or stay cold long enough to justify the cost.

I'm giving more thought to another window somewhere for the cross ventilation.

I'm having a second estimate writte up, this time with a shingle roof and vynil siding for a more "residential" look. I don't mind the all metal buildings but they do have a commercial look about them so I just want to see what the difference would be before I decide.

Back to insulation...

The interior will be unfinished so no ceilings or anything. How do you insulate the underside of the roof? Is there such a thing as insulation with a sticky side or do you have to put something across the exposed side to keep it from sagging / falling?

Vinyl backed insulation is laid on top of the purlins and the roofing metal is placed on top. That is for a typical metal building. It can also be done with a wood frame. The vinyl side is faced inward.

Spray foam insulation. Have a crew come in and spray it all. Thats what I'm thinking about doing so I don't have to mess with putting a ceiling in and leave the rafters open for storage. I will still OSB the walls though.

I got a ballpark on doing the walls & ceiling based soley on the building dimensions and was quoted $3500 using Icynene(sp?). :eek1: It's a great idea and product but just not enough budget for it.

Edit: once built I am thinking about having them come out to quote just the ceiling only.

If you can, get the cellulose spray insulation. If not, then use some R19 and use twine to criss cross over the insulation after its hung. Thats what I did and it sucked, but its not goin anywhere.

Ok, the 2nd estimate finally came back and this fella was about $14k MORE than the 1st. Don't think I'm going to use him. :doah:

For sure figure out some kind of cross ventilation be it a rear walk-in door or windows. I had a 30x40 built in dec. they used "bubble wrap" type. It was around 1/2 price of plastic backed type, works just as good too.

I don't know if your gonna do it yourself or have it built but theses guys did mine http://www.maderightbuildings.com/ . I've got about 15k in it slab, insulation, erection and including the dirt.

Trukker, I'm going to holler at these guys next - did they have a rep come to you to work up the estimate or..? Any issues during the build or after?

Thanks for the link!

is your land already cleared or do you have to take trees down and stuff?

Fortunately that's the best part so far, the land is clear with no trees so aside from a little dirt to level it I'm good.

Just plan to build an outdoor room for your compressor, takes a tiny bit more concrete and a bit more wood and insulation to make it quiet enough to not bother anyone but well worth it. Certainly not a budget buster

John, I can only say one thing about your plans: go bigger.

Trust me on this, I wished I had built mine bigger than the 30 x 50 it is now. Don't spend money twice. Just do it once and be done with it.

The running theme, in life, for guys like us....

I saw 8- 110 outlets and thought, "pffft... do 16."
If you have the $, or want to save it in the long run... I'd go bigger now.

Edit:

I really like ur plan, tho.
I only wish I had the space!

Just a quicky update, plans are to go with the original (local) company. They were the only folks I talked to that had all the bases covered - high enough wind load, engineered drawings and reasonable (butnot the cheapest) cost. I'm going to sign the contract today and it should be built by the end of July.

I've still got to figure out the electrical but that'll come once it's built.

Did you ever add a door or window to the far end in the plans?

Martin

Yeah, I added another window on the "ground floor" level far wall. I hope that's enough. :dunno:

might think about an attic fan up high too. I put one in with the auto door on it. Works great to get any exhaust stuff out and also keep a slight breeze when its warm. I also built a little room in the back corner for my compressor, floor heat stuff, lawn mower, its about 13' wide by 5' deep. Then insulated the whole room with r19. Keeps things really quiet.
