Having a hard time figuring out where everything is going in my new shop, so I am looking for ideas. I plan on putting shelving up after I pass inspection on wednesday.

What I have to put in.

30"x8' work bench
Standing drill press
Welder cart
Air compressor
Tube bender
2 Crapsman tool chests
extended cab short bed dmax
k20 thingy
4wheeler
zero turn mower.

Shop is 24x32 with a 12' wide garage door, standard door and 2 windows.

Air compressor needs to go outside.

Tons of info on how to build and enclosure for cheap that still has good airflow and kills the sound.

Drill IMHO needs to be close to wherever your vice is or wherever you do most of your major cutting.

I would say build 2 benches one like you said and then another for heavy fab.

I only have one bench right now but once I start moving alot of stuff out to the shed I will be building another one.

One for clean assembly ( gears, transmissions, even engines.) one for heavy fab ( grinding, grinding, grinding, sanding, then more grinding, then some more grinding).

Helps keep the garage clean

Put the mower where you can get it out really easy if you need the room.

I think the areas that don't get used as much as they should in a shop are the higher up areas and the areas underneath benches. In perfect world I would have tool boxes under my benches.

As much as you can on wheels. I need to make my drill press moveable, tube bender already is, chop saw needs to built on a wheeled stand and of course the welding cart is moveable

I like the idea of having everything mobile. I also forgot, cherry picker(folds up) and engine stand.

My goal is keep my attached garage just for parking and minimum tools. Ie maybe a shovel, rake etc.

I need other ideas for mounting stuff like ladders, yard tools etc.

Eric do you have a hydraulic cylinder on your bender? I have the manual protools hd105 bender. I can't see that being on a cart and bending tube. Having the bender in the floor will kill a ton of space.

yah. Dude its so cheap get it done.

I had my bender setup in the best spot in my garage to bend tube, literally right in the middle of the freaking floor it sucked.

If you can't convert it put a couple places in the floor for it to be bolted down too. Even saw one guy put it up casters that could flip up so he could move it out of the way once he was done bending tube.

The swag kit isn't that expensive. Its soooooooooooooooooooooooooo worth it

Gonna grab that swag kit! 150 bucks is well worth the space, plus not having to crank on that bar ever again.

make sure you have to many outlets for everything

100 A Electrical is coming in the spring. Couldn't afford to do it all at once, well I could, I just couldn't fence in the back yard to keep the wife happy.

Happy wife, happy life right?

I have two 20A circuits in my garage that I'll run some hefty extension cords out for the time being.

Garage and barn at 40 feet apart

I don't see couch for sleeping on when kicked out of the house.

Concur on compressor outside. Takes up a lot of space, makes a lot of noise. Just poured a small concrete slab with studs in it, made a lean-to type overhang off the back of the garage, slapped some exterior sheathing on it, done. Draining the tank you have to go outside, but valve for air is inside. With no plumbing leaks, never need to worry about turning it on/off. If you have the money, they make automatic tank drains, but I have no idea how well they work in the long run, and IIRC, they are pretty pricey.

On the bench, I used 1/4" plate as a top for it, countersunk bolt heads so nothing to snag on. 1" edge overhang for the steel (3/4" plywood underneath) so you can really clamp things well. Made it L shaped because there is a stub wall so it was convenenient, plus putting the vise on an accessible corner makes a lot of sense. 30" sounds about right, I've got an arc welder on a stand, two 350's, a 205, and a 465 underneath it, plus various other parts, and they are never in the way. Tabletop is fairly high, as I didn't want to be bent over all the time while working. High enough that a motor on rolling cradle (not engine stand) fits under it.

I tried to keep everything yard related in the house garage. Doesn't ever work out that way, the mowers take up a LOT of space no matter where they are. I hung pretty much all the yard tools I could, which frees up floor space. Same deal in the garage, the overhead space is often wasted, I got my hands on a ton of pegboard, so coated the walls in that as much I could. Pegboard isn't real strong, won't hold a ton of weight, but its adaptable for just about anything that isn't overly heavy, and the hanger pieces are pretty cheap. Also a good way to hang spare parts.

Bottom section of the walls are 4x8 sheets of painted chipboard (with a tiny space between it and the floor to prevent rot) as I figured drywall would get destroyed quickly. Easy to remove and install if you need to access wiring, or whatever.

I have a fair number of heavier duty shelf units that are ~6' tall and fairly narrow, that helps for the heavy stuff or organizing smaller items, while still keeping them somewhat out of the way.

Tons and tons of outlets. You will never have enough. The one you need right at that moment will always be covered.

Lighting was a PITA. I got my hands on 4 bulb fixtures for free, but only about half the bulbs work in each. Put three fixtures per bay, right down the middle. Rolling up the door covers one of them, which is problematic. Probably better to be situated between the bays, and either one on a switch, or on at all times, over the workbench. Lighting behind you doesn't work well. Each bay is on a separate light switch, since you don't always need every bay lit up, and if lighting is adequate, you don't need all the other ones on. I also installed a "lit" light switch for the first light bay, so when reaching in the door when it's dark out, you know where the switches are.

I laid down plywood on the rafters to store fairly light stuff that I won't need to access often.

All the stuff that rolls (mig welder, engine hoist, horizontal band saw, tool chest, etc) ideally sits between the bays when not in use, that depends what vehicle is in there, how much clearance there is with door(s) open, etc. Never enough space, but I have a hard time keeping things (projects) from creeping in there.

Yah its going to be a project but I have an idea for lighting. Its going to be rough for the first year but It will get better. I just want to take the time and put things in there neatly, rather than just throw it in just to get it out of the Garage.

I don't care how you set it up, you WILL move some things more then once until you are satisfied it's exactly like, or as close to it as your going to get it. At least you should do that so it works like you want it to. Your garage is one huge tool itself. It has to work right too. So layout is important. I've been working on mine for decades lol! Good luck brother :waytogo:

Oh so true

Lets see those shops!

I'm building a new one right now too, but mine is 24x48x16' eve.

Going to do a 24x16 loft in the back end for permanent parts storage,
and a small office in the front corner.
I didn't have much room for more floor space, so I did a 16' wall.

Ive been playing with the idea of putting my stationary stuff ( drill press/lathe etc on a 2nd story landing. My thinking is that i dont ever need those tools for big bulky parts, so running up stairs to turn a pin or drilll a hole wont be so bad.

this landing would give me a sweet place to mount a welding/plasma boom from too. I really hate dragging my stinger in the dirt.

what do you guys think?
