How portable is your shop if you have to pack up and move?

I just moved everything I own across several states and it wasn't easy. I'm bruised and banged up and I'm about to drill a hole in my thumbnail to relieve the pressure that's built up from the bleeding underneath it.

This got me thinking about the next time I move, I'd like to do it smarter. I moved just shy of 11K lbs of stuff. All of it besides 8 guitars and a few firearms and ammo were garage items.

Here's what I was thinking.

- I had three craftsman rollaways. They were all beat up from several moves before and I eventually want to upgrade them, but they were so damn heavy it killed me to move them. Plus, with a top and bottom box, they were so tall, when I pushed them down the uhaul ramp, two of the three fell over and dumped tools all over the ground. :doah: (drawers were even closed and locked). I'm definitely going to be upgrading the toolboxes.

- I made an air compressor stand out of scrap metal so I could get under it and easily drain it. I need to make it wider, shorter and put wheels on it. It's a pain in the ass leaning a compressor over to get it in and out of a garage.

- Moving my welder was a pain in the ass. I put kart slicks on the welding cart because it looked cool. But, they lose air pressure and it get's wobbly. I'll probably be changing those out for something that is more function and less form.

- Other random items need wheels on them to include blast cabinet, parts washer and all workbenches.

I don't know. Maybe I should just get a job where I'm not moving every 3-6 years.

Time to get one of these!:D

All kidding aside, I dread the day I have to pack up the garage and move. It will definitely bring the suck. Only saving grace to that is both the wife and I agree next time we move we are both getting what we want out the next house. (Big shop for me.:waytogo:)

One of the times I got deployed, I moved my stuff into storage (I was single).
My first PCS was a nightmare. I got my orders on the 6th of July and had a report NLT date of 20 July, moving from south Georgia to Wyoming (1600 miles). I was in the middle of a frame-off resto of a 69 chevelle, and a rebuld of a D60 on my K5. I did a Dity move with the help of my dad and wife.
I have 4 roller chests (3-24", 1-40") a HD work bench, press, hoist etc. I also moved a 14 Bolt FF that I was going to swap in my k-5, an engine & transmission (SBC 400/TH350) that I was rebuilding for the chevelle, a SM645/208 combo I have as a spare for the K5, and many other tools, tires, parts etc.
U-haul was over 12K (and packed to the max) and towed my chevelle, I towed my K5 with my truck.
After I transitioned to civy life, I did a dity move from Wyoming to Arkansas, loading up the u-haul etc.

It will be nice when I find a place to settle down and stop moving.

Pretty much sounded like my move! I had to do a partial DITY or I would have been 6K lbs over my weight limit. They moved everything in the house, which was around 12K lbs and I moved everything in the garage which was around 11K lbs. 26 foot uhaul packed to the max (weighed 23K lbs) towing my truck (didn't get a weight on that).

oooh docker locker!!!!

when i move again its going to suck most likely. however i only forsee one more move to arizona (ca is wearing on me) then sometime down the road id like to add a place maybe in montana as a second home.

biggest pain in my move will be all the car parts, then vehicles (currently 5). household items will fit in one load in a 26ft box trailer, same as last time i moved. the garage stuff took 3 trips with the same trailer, 4 truckbeds and a flatbed trailer with a truck on it with bed filled.
